I'm currently a Canadian citizen. If I live somewhere in US with a friend and apply for citizenship as a permanent residence while staying with them.. Do I need proof of their financial support? If so, how much income do they need to have, if they don't make that much, then what?

A friend can provide the affidavit of support, or can be a co-sponsor with someone else, but just what basis are you using to apply for permanent residence? A "friend" can't do that for you. Usually, you need an employer or a close relative or spouse who is a U.S. citizen to sponsor you. |

Well, first of all, a friend can not sponsor you for permanent residency. It has to be either employment based or family based (spouse, parent, child etc.)

Is your friend a US citizen? If not, he cannot sponsor you.
Household income has to be 125% above the poverty line in order for a US citizen to sponsor a noncitizen. The size of the household will include the sponsoree.
If can't prove that, then it is assumed that you will be relying on public assistance (or even illegal activities) and for that reason you will be denied a Green Card. |

For citizenship NO.
For permanent residence YES.
In other words in order to get the permanent residence they have to prove financial support. This stays in force until you die, work 40 quarters (10 years), leave the US permanently, your green card is no longer valid for whatever reason or you become a citizen.
