Was immigration a huge deal in 70s,80s,90s,and early 2000s?

Were the borders heavily secure like today?

Not anything like it is today! And the borders weren't near as secure... this is all post 9-11. People didn't get into heated debates and blame one country for their woes.

Illegal immigration has always been a "huge" deal. It's just that now more than ever we are fed up and tired of these parasites sponging off tax payers. Illegal immigrants tend to have little to no education at all. That is an enormous problem.
We need to fix this problem asap! The last thing we want is to turn into a third world country. Just take a look at who is reproducing like rabbits.

Immigration has never been a huge deal. ILLEGAL immigration has. Please separate the two. Ed Meese (on President Reagan's staff) has said that Reagan admitted his biggest mistake was granting amnesty to illegals. We can't let that happen again. Deport now.

Legal and illegal immigration from Mexico has increased tremendously since the institution of NAFTA. As a result of NAFTA a lot of Mexicans have been left without means to support themselves and therefore try to get to the US in hopes of finding work.
