I think time is the key to the assimilation of immigrants.

One of the joys I've experienced in life is learning about and experiencing other peoples cultures. And when it comes to an immigrant population, their customs and the culture they bring with them tend to alter to some degree as the given immigrant population is assimilated. This is something I've witnessed in New York, Boston, London, San Jose Costa Rica, Dublin, Montreal and Belfast.

Interesting how some people automatically assume you are referring to Mexicans and Spanish. The key to assimilation is tolerance on our part and a willingness on the part of the immigrant to learn enough about the culture here to feel comfortable.

The key to immigrant assimilation I consider is acceptance from both parts that there are differences in cultures, both parts need to understand that is not easy to change traditions in one day. Our nation was founded by different cultures and that is why we are great. Every culture contributing to create a great nation, being good citizens and respecting others with different backgrounds.

the key to immigrant assimilation is learning the language of your new country and respecting the culture you have come to. you don't have to give up your culture to do this. i am very tolerant of cultural differences and expect the same.

The "key" as you put it is to learn the language and laws before they ever get here. That's how to do it. Legals do assimilate
The real issue is they, the "illegals" won't and don't care.
I know alot of immigrants that did it right. Everyone should.
Eliminate the bleeding heart libs, groups like La Raza and then some. Want change? that's it.

Enforce the current immigration laws, b4 some Dem sneaks it in on another bill (trying to change the existing law)

The reason why I love this country so much is because of all the cultures and languages people brought with them. I also love the customs we have here as well.

The problem is, that some immigrants don't know how to speak English. I can see why it is a problem, but it doesn't give anyone a reason to bash someone!

I'm very tolerant of differnt cultures and languages. I love it! I learned so much from people that are waaay different than me. For an example, my fiancee is Turkish, boy I learned soo much. Food, language, culture, music, & religion.

Some people have different views of how "America" is suppose to be. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but some people take way too far and it becomes a racial battle.

I think some illegal immigrants should go home and I think some should earn their rights here. Yea they broke the law, but there are criminals here too that are citizens, that should leave as well. But like I said everyone is entitled to their own opinion! =]

Simple stop trying to force the Hispanic culture down the throats of American citizens, I honestly don't think its a racism thing but Americans are upset with the fact that so many Illegal immigrants in this country either don't take the time or flat out refuse to learn English and ASSIMILATE!

Last year drove SO many Americans crazy with all these marches and demonstrations by millions of illegal immigrants DEMANDING to be treated like citizens.

I'm a Hispanic male and I do feel sorry for these people but common, my parents worked hard to come to this country LEGALLY!

We need to stop all immigration for about the next 20 years and allow those here to assimilate into our society. It should be a law that in order to become an American citizen, you must learn English, give up you citizenship to any other country, learn the history of our country, learn how our government works, and learn about the American society. In other words you must become an American not just someone with an American citizenship

The movie Gangs of New York addresses your question. While I don't think that it is a very good movie it serves to illustrate that immigrant assimilation occurs over time and the process is aided by conflict that both changes the immigrant and non-immigrant.

The idea of a melting-pot is so often used that what is over looked is the destructive process of melting itself. All citizens are in the pot and are going to come out differently.
Our Constitution may be able to weather new immigrants, if not, we have to be ready to promote new ideas to improve upon the Constitution.

I don't really care, everyone is their own person and has the right to live the way they want to... think of it this way, would you like it if someone tried to change who you were??? no, right... so stop trying to change a person just because they are of a different culture... if it pisses people off so much that a person speaks a different language and has a different culture then they should learn about it or just plain ignore it... there is no need for the word "tolerate" in cultural differences, everyone is different and it shouldn't matter that someone else is different from you, just live and let live...
if america really wanted all those people who don't speak english to learn it, then they should stop interpreting everything in a different language, make english the official language of the united states, with that said people will eventually try and learn english...

the key to assimilation is a common language....english. I respect other cultures and I firmly encourage maintaining the identitiy of ones FORMER culture, but when they come to the U.S., in public they should join the American culture. when they are at home, or with like friends, they can speak what ever language they want, eat what ever food they want, what ever they want. My wife is filipina and she understands this, although our honky friends love Philippine food. If your former country and culture is so great, then why are you here?

I believe the key to assimilation is language. The key to tolerance is usually food. You can't assimilate if you don't yunderstand the people in your community. As to tolerance, I believe I am a bit too tolerant. I often being taken advantage. I see peolpe use their culture for their own selfish needs and use their culture for their selfish desire. They would use American culture only when it benefits them, and use their native culture when it's too their advantage. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, but As a community, I believe we must be far more strict then my personal example. The person immigrants hurt when comes to my tolerance is usually me. I see a potential for far worse when looking at the big picture, and I can take a few hits, but others may not.
