What Would the World be like if there were No Borders?

Additional Details
Freedom of movement = people live and work from wherever they choose...

Caliban
As a EU politician once said
"Our borders are written in blood, they are not easily erased"

How and why do you think borders arose?

If you need an example of how trivial borders are, consider Israel, Georgia, Yugoslavia, Kashmir, Congo and many other African states.

No borders, no government, no law, no peace.

On the plus side you would have the freedom to die a violent death and plenty of opportunities so to do.

Everyone for themselves. No stable communities meaning social isolation. Families broken up and spread all over the world. High pressure on resources in some areas with consequent impoverishment. I think you would find people would eventually form their own social groups again, leading to the beginnings of 'tribal' groups.

Mayhem & murder - do you have to ask?

Edit - there could be no 'national' welfare system at all.

Where the Isla meets the Tay.
There are physical boundaries remember. Mountains, rivers and sea.
I would stay where I am because I love my country.

Dead planet. People would move to one area and cause it to collapse. Then go one to the next area and cause it to collapse. Etc. until there is no infra structure left. No food, no potable water, murder, rape, whatever else, no law or order. Only a moron would want no borders! The number of people who want to come to the US would cause the collapse of the US as soon as they got here! Did you think that the water system would support unlimited people? Power grid? Sewerage system? It would be a worse place than any of them came from! People killing others to get a cup of water!

Dictatorship, since there could only be one goverment.
Various cultural borders would exist still.

your looking at it. the EU......an utterly chaotic ill thought out disaster that will bring both halves of the world down to the same level. and eventually deteriorate to an Islamic nightmare.

scene kidd
well the world would be in one big mess wars and al of that crap! but i get what you mean. ur question should be more along the lines of what would the world be like if their were no boundrie lines for decent people who would love to go and work in a foreign country and not have to be kicked out evry yr ta av ta re apply for stupid visas!!! >:(

It would definitely make learning geography pretty difficult, as there would be no definition of where something began and ended, but then again there would be no point in labeling a country or territory or state as there are no borders.

It would probably end up a lot like it did back in 17,298 BC.

utter chaos, people would lose all sense of identify with their country. Better question is, would the world be better with no EU or MORE borders.

It would probably be peaceful. If we did away with borders it would mean that we had done away with narrow nationalism and embraced an internationalist agenda.

The bigots and racists would have been marginalised to the extent that the ideas of borders and restrictions on movement would be looked upon as crazy.

chaos!! But do you mean if there were never any borders or they were to come down all of a sudden?

willoug
actually geographically in nature no borders exist. borders are a human invention and of no use to any one or anyting apart from huans themselves

In places like Britain, and Europe and North America, I would expect not much to change. But in places like the middle east, South America and Africa (less developed countries) it would probably be chaos and war, especially in Africa.

The word border can refer to several things:
Administrative divisions - Every state in USA has definite borders which limit the territorial extent of authorities - governor of California has nothing to say in Nevada. Other than that these borders have no other effects on people.
National borders - Citizens of any particular country have rights and privileges citizens of other countries do not have in that particular country. People like the idea of different citizenship "I am American and I am better than Mexicans" but in reality citizenship restricts ones freedom because one can not move out of his native country without loosing rights of citizenship, even when one moves to a country where people have exactly the same rights. For example; Americans do not have the right to work in Canada and Canadians do not have the right to work in USA. What that gives us, other than limiting our options?
In extreme case borders can make one a prisoner in his own country. As was the case for people living behind iron curtain.
In short, the world without borders would be the world with more freedom but many people are afraid of freedom so they want to be caged.

WWI and WWII caused a great deal of chaos, diseases and hatred and there were borders! Tribes before civilization began were barbaricly killing one another. The truth is, with or without the borders, trust me people will always find another border to divise themselves. It will either be by colour or religion, it's happened and it is happening, regardless of whether or not we have any passport check points.

I don't know but I have a feeling it would not be very good. How would you convince so many people to follow the same system.
