What are the benefits of applying for a US passport before I turn 18?
|
For some reason my father is insisting that I should apply for one before I turn 18... I have no idea why. I checked the website and the fees are similar.
Its actually better to apply after I turn 18 because they will not require the parental consent and etc.
BTW I'm only a permanent resident (not born here) and not a citizen yet.
If that makes a difference.
I am 17 turning 18 in May. Additional Details how exactly?
i mean when i turn 18 i wouldn't fall under his paperwork anymore. Im confused

Well, if you're only a permanent resident, it makes a very big difference. If you're not a US citizen, you can't get a US passport, no matter what your age is. Once you become a citizen, you certainly can. But then, it will be up to you whether to apply or not. Most Americans don't have passports. It does make it easier to prove your citizenship when you need to though and citizens are supposed to leave and re-enter the US with a US passport.
By the way, immigration has nothing to do with passports, but they will handle your naturalization when that happens. at the moment, getting a passport goes very quickly. |

You cant get a passport if you are not a citizens. However, I think is easeir to become a citizend if you are under 18 and one of your parents is a citizent. |

If your mother and/or father are citizens already then you automatically became a citizen by the child citizenship act of 2000. If this applied to you, get it before you turn 18!!! You would need your permanent resident card, your foreign birth certificate with a certified english translation, and the citizen parent's proof of citizenship (naturalization certificate.) |

Your father is absolutely correct. You fall under his paperwork now then you have to have all your paperwork in order and the INS people are dragging feet on all paperwork. It might take years before you could get one ofter 18.
