Excellent question in this section. I think the array of answers proves a very good point - there is no single thing that constitutes being British, it is a total illusion. Australians and Americans speak English - doesn't make them British, I know tons of so-called Brits that hate fish and chips, football and live in Ireland lol. I really hope your question gets people thinking - sadly I'm not sure it will. |

Generally you have to be born in Britain, however I do agree with one comment made that an awful lot of immigrants can now say that they are British. However I am Scottish and I don't agree with the comments that have been said about us not being British. I am not English but I am British as Scotland is part of the United Kingdon - Great Britain, wether people like it or not. |

You have to be a citizen of the UK to be considered British. Ethnicity is irrelevant (unless you subscribe to the British Nationalist Party philosophy). |

the only criteria i can think of is to be born in britian to be british. i don't think it matters where the parents come from as long as the person is born in the UK. |

Are you referring to being a British Citizen? - if so you have to:
- have been resident in the UK for 5 Years
- be of good character;
- have a good knowledge of a British language (which could be Welsh or Gaelic);
- pass the naturalisation multiple choice test |

Being a citizen of the UK, either naturalised, native-born, or from one of the few remaining dependent territories. They get British passports now. However while by this criteria all the people in Northern Ireland would be British, those from the nationalist community would rather consider themselves Irish.
If you are wondering how to become British, you have to live here for a certain num,ber of years before applying and passing a citizenship test. |
