Unfortunately there isn't much that you can say. You can apply for a visitors visa and see what happens. But your boyfriend will need to be able to show enough regular income to support you while there, or you will need enough money to cover any possible situation that may arise. Plus they are real skeptical about single women going to visit single men. They think that you will want to end wanting to stay and get married.
I encountered a similar problem first time I went to England to visit my boyfriend (now husband). I was held in customs for 5 1/2 hours, then only allowed to stay 3 days. I had to come back home to the states and apply for a visitors visa. Which I did end up getting, but it took a lot of paper work and evidence to prove to them that I would be coming back to the states at the end of my visit.

If you are a US citizen, it should not be difficult. You do not even have to tell them expansive explanations just simply tell them that you are visiting.
People from first world countries are not given extensive scrutiny because they know they have a good life to go back to, a home, a job or a career. Once you can prove that you are established in one place, especially the US, then you can pretty much breeze in their country. If you are coming in a third world country then it would be a different story as you would have to, not only sufficiently but strongly, prove that you have no intention of staying fin the UK forever. |

The chances of getting a visitors visa may depend on which is your home country and whether the Home Office believes you are genuine or are just wanting to get in the UK to "disappear". There are many political problems currently with illegals and that makes it harder for you. |
