I have a foreign last name and want to change it to the name that my mother took when she re-married (I was a minor when this happened). I'm 19, live in North Carolina, and am not a US citizen. I have a green card and I believe I'm eligible for citizenship in 2011. What do I need to do to change my name? Is it going to be harder to change my name because I'm not a citizen? My mother changed hers because she got married. Where do I need to start?

First poster, idk if you meant to, but you kind of came off as a d0uche. I've lived in the US since I was a kid and don't speak any languages other than English; You don't need to talk down to me.

You have to have your name changed by the government of the country you came from. The US does NOT change the names of citizens of other countries as a general rule (marriage name changes if allowed by the country of origin is an exception). You might just want to wait until you become a citizen. You can at that time change your US name for free (It may not be accepted by your country of origin).
My wife has a Chinese name most everybody gets wrong. The ROC doesn't allow name changes. She had to wait until she got citizenship in order to legally change her name. Her passports read:
ROC: "Family name", "first name"
US: "first name", "new middle name", "married name"
She now signs her name "C [new middle name] [married name]"
And that is the way it will stay.

It's a fiddly process to change your name when you're in the US, you have to go through the courts do to it.
When you become a naturalized citizen, you have the option of taking on a new legal name at that point. I'd be inclined to wait for 2011 when you are eligible to naturalize and use that as the process of changing your name. |
