my passport (from my country of citizenship) is expired and i don't have time to renew it. will re-entry papers, my green card and drivers license be enough to go to the Caribbean? i'm a california resident and haven't left the U.S. in 14 years.

Re-entry permit is not a replacement of a passport.It is an authorization for you from the US government that you can leave the country and allows you to come back.A passport which establishes your citizenship is requirement in most countries when you travel overseas including the USA.It will be a wiser idea to have your passport renewed before you travel to save you from getting in any trouble or delays. |

You need a birth certificate, plus valid driver's license, to enter most Caribbean destinations and I doubt a green card takes the place of a birth certificate - it, definitely, isn't a substitute for a passport as the green card must be submitted with a valid passport. While you may be able to get to the Caribbean, you won't be allowed to return here as, with no passport, US Immigration has the right to deny your return no matter how many years you've lived here, Your re-entry permit isn't applicable if you're out of the USA for less than a year as, again, you need a green card plus passport. If you're out of the country for more than a year, you could return with re-entry papers plus passport. Legally, you're a foreigner with a green card, not an American citizen..

You must have a passport to go to Caribbean and come back to US.
Nothing can "act" or substitute your passport. Renew it through consulate or embassy of your country of citizenship. |
