What you really have to keep in mind is that this is 2008, not 1808. What happened 200 years ago (in terms of immigration) was neither good nor bad.... it simply happened.

It never ceases to amaze me how people assume that just because there was ample resources to support a flood of immigrants 200 years ago, that somehow we are now beholden to every foreigner that now wants to waltz into this country.

One could argue technically that we could probably pack a billion people into the US and devote our entire economic output to feeding them all. But what about the _quality_ of life? Is that not important?

I think illegal immigrants should be forcibly prevented from entering the US. As well, the government should stop acting like we are living in the turn of the 18th century and wake up to the reality of world overpopulation and protect this prosperous nation rather than letting it get dragged down into the mud.

I feel like LEGAL immigration is just fine. It's the illegal immigration that is wrong. If someone is found to be in this country illegally they should be sent back to where they came from. We have let illegal immigrants stay in this country to long and that is where our problems with immigration are.

I think the US should process those hopeful immigrants that have been waiting forever to come here legally a whole lot faster and get the illegals out of here. We don't now and have never needed illegals. Immigrants however are only a plus so lets get the ball rolling faster for the people that deserve to be here, are wanted here, and needed here. Again, that does not include any illegals at all...or amnesty for any here....or future opportunity to come here. Permanent ban after deportation.

The fact that immigration was a big part of HISTORY is just that, HISTORY. The situation is much different now. The country is populated to the point that increased population reduces quality of life.

That said, immigration is fine as long as it's done in a controlled legal fashion where the implications are considered. Legal immigrants and documented workers are fine. Illegals should be removed.

There isn't another country that would allow the ILLEGAL immigration to get out of control like we did. Canada and Mexico wouldn't. Why should we?

Send them home. Make them apply and enter the country legally.

I like the 275,000 we let in every year. I think we have a good system, but as far as illegal immagrants go we should definitly buckle down. I mean there is a estimation of about 1 thousand +++ (not sure the correct number, but way over one thousand) illegal immagrants that come in a year, with this amount we could turn into China and have to start limiting our children to only one a family. I do not think it is right for us to have to suffer for to many illegal immagrants.

We should definitely secure our borders. If so many illegal immigrants can get into the U.S. undetected, then so can terrorists. They may be coming here to look for a better way of life, but it is still illegal. People always say "they are just looking for work to have a better life." They don't understand the meaning of illegal! A thief breaks into your house and steals your things so that they can have a better life. This is illegal in the U.S., so should we start letting thieves go and do things as they please?

I think people that want to immigrate into the US or any country for that matter should not receive special treatment. People choose to move to one country or another and can work to improve themselves. This is assuming they are legal immigrants. Countries should find ways to improve the immigration process so that so many are not illegal immigrants.

i think it was good at one time to let immigrant in, but now its getting to crowded and we should quit letting people in are country. except maybe to vist and check it out. after that they should go back from there own country. there is enough people as it is.

I think that we should deport all of the illegal immigrants that are in jail, prison or anything of the such. I think that if an illegal immigrant has been in our country for more than a certain amount of years (like five or ten) and have never been convicted of a felony, and also have been working and paying taxes and NOT doing it with false documentation it should be made easier for them to gain citizenship.

Since most of the illegal immigrants are from Mexico, and there are so many more that want to cross the border that can't. Well, I think that they should give Mexico to the USA. I think that we could go into Mexico and do so much more than simply letting them stay here illegally. We can clean it up, put some law in there, and literally save lives while doing it.
Mexicans love their heritage and family. A lot of them have to painfully leave loved ones behind to come to America and work so they can send money home and their family can eat. Also, there are people who flee Mexico to America to save their lives. Some parts of Mexico are lawless and dangerous. EVEN SOME BIG CITIES! Well, I'm sure it'll never happen but I bet it would be great if it did. And Mexico would be the biggest state in the US!

If you're talking about illegal immigrants, I'd say get rid of them! If you're talking about those who came here legally that's a different matter. This country was built by immigrants, and knowing people from different cultures and ethnic groups enriches our lives. In the USA we need to stop being so damn insular and enbrace others. We're not all that, we're just another bunch of great people who should get to know all the other great people in the world!

I think the US should embrace immigration. Immigrants provide a large, relatively cheap workforce who are, in general, more willing to take the lower paid or more labour intensive jobs.

Immigration can also fill skills shortages in particular areas. In fact, many immigrants are in fact skilled in trades or disciplines such as medicine but take other jobs due to language restrictions or only wanting to stay temporarily to make more money than the could at home. This seems to be one of the main reasons for immigration to the UK.

Being born in New Zealand, I know for a fact they rely on immigration and short term workers such as backpackers to pick and process fruit, one of the country's most important industries.

You will always have people complaining that immigrants are stealing their jobs and their houses. Whilst in some cases this may be true, as obviously in an area in which many immigrants are arriving pressure will be put on local services and housing, for the most part this seems to be the human need to have someone else to blame.

My feeling is our laxed policy on controlling the influx of immigrants is OUR fault and not the fault of those who are trying to live a better life (by working under min. wage and living 10 to a 2 bedroom apartment).

We do need to fix the problem. We need to secure the border before we do anything else. Then we need to revamp our immigration system. We need to make the process easy to understand, and make tough consequences for those who don't follow the rules. It would also be of great help if we can get Mexico's help with deportation of illegals once new rules come into play. BUT to get that we may have to have some sort of amnesty program.

I am not opposed to amnesty for any alien without a criminal record (must be completely clean). Most of them already contribute to our society, we might as well make them accountable for taxes. I think we should set a deadline for illegals to declare themselves to the government. Anyone undeclared or with a criminal record should then be deported with no re-entry for 5 years. At that point they can get in line for immigration if still desired. Also, there would need to be some sort of amnesty for businesses that employed illegals up until the deadline. I think their only penalty should be to keep the illegals on staff, but actually pay them the appropriate wage. But way harsher penalties should be given after the deadline.

As we have in the past when our economy has taken a downward spiral, slow it down until our economy picks up again. That's the right way. Because too many people are getting angry at immigrants, and it's not their fault, it's the congress who keeps it growing.
