BALTIMORE - A Howard County woman pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to harboring illegal aliens in her Hanover restaurant.

Yen Wan Cheng, 54, of Columbia, faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for employing several illegal employees at the Red Parrot Asian Bistro. U.S. District Judge Frederick Motz will sentence her Aug. 20.

"Employers in all industries and locations must comply with U.S. employment laws if we are to have an effective immigration enforcement strategy in this country," William Winter, special agent in charge of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcements Office of Investigations, said in a statement.

From February 2009 to February 2010, Cheng operated the restaurant in the Arundel Mills Preserve and employed a staff of about 12. At least five of the workers were not permitted to live and work in the United States, according to Cheng's plea agreement.

On Feb. 4, a search of the restaurant revealed that several workers were undocumented. They said Cheng hired them without getting proof of their legal status or eligibility to work in the United States.

The illegal workers were paid from $1,400 to $2,800 a month by cash or check with no taxes withheld. Several lived in a house in Columbia that Cheng owned, and were driven to work in Cheng's van.

Dear Donna, your comment on the income outs you as someone that doesn't live in an area even remotely similar the areas where illegal immigration is prevalent. While this doesn't shock me, it does clarify that you truly are looking at this issue through a very tiny window in your immaculate 6+ figure home in a very, very pale neighborhood.

Do us all a favor, fly to Houston, rent a sub compact car and drive 100 miles outside of the city. Any direction. Only then can you even grasp the concept that is being presented here.

Read it. So odd that you empathize more greatly with those here illegally, many of whom are intentionally ignoring our laws, raping and demoralizing our country after feeding 4 kids an onion.

I would have thought those experiences would have empowered you to fight to save the morals, values and systems in place that allowed you to succeed and not just give them away as if they mean nothing.

Unfortunately, this is easy to do (using people here illegally) in the restaurant business, and those run by Chinese owners have been caught like this before, in cities like New York. That owner was actually pretty fair, most illegals hired in this way get very little. If Cheng is a naturalized citizen she might be able to have her citizenship revoked.

These people were earning less than minimum wage. Granted they are illegal, or supposedly illegal. We need to nip this problem in the bud at the source of the problem, the employers.

If they were paid $50 a day, and worked 7 days a week, that would be $350 a week.
Multiply by 4 for a month, and you have $1400.00.
It states how some lived at her home, so maybe that was a perk, and valued at say $50 a day?
That would all equal the $2800.00.
Maybe yes, they were.

Illegals never pay income or social security taxes. They don't have social security numbers so therefore they don't pay taxes. It amazes me how liberals try to make the argument that illegals pay taxes. They only pay sales taxes when they buy something and can't get out of paying them. They cost the taxpayers way more money then they contribute, that is one of the big reasons this country is broke.

Granted it is probably better than what they would have earned in their home country, but still, come on now. This is just sad. It isn't fair how they get taken advantage of.

However if they throw the book at this restaurant owner for hiring these illegals, and do the same across the board, then maybe the jobs will dry up, and the illegal problem will ease up some.

I can see both sides of this coin. I agree we need to do something about the illegal problem. If we take away the jobs so many come here seeking, then that will solve a lot of these issues. If we also make it harder to get welfare, for everyone, not just illegals, then that will help as well.
I can sympathize with these people, because I have known a few. I have sat and heard their stories, and my heart bled. As a mother, I know what it is like to know your kids are going without. Years ago, when the sh*t hit the fan for my family, if I thought for one second that I could have majorly improved their situation by sneaking into another country, and work illegally...I would have done it in a heart beat. I am not saying every single illegal comes here just because of their kids, but I do know that there are a lot who do. It is these illegals that I feel for. Not all of them.
