my wife was brought here to america from mexico when she was 3 yrs old, illegally by the way,. What is the process of her becoming a U.S. citizen and how much does it cost? ...Does she not become a U.S. citizen once we get married, and we now have 2 kids?

Hi. I'm going through a similar process, but I'm requesting my mother. First form you need to fill out is called I-130. Which is pretty much the petition. And seriously. You can do this all without a lawyer if you have decent reading/writing skills.
The gov't makes it surprisingly simple to follow instructions on their forms. Once you fill out the I-130, they're going to ask you to continually send new documentation. The process is easy, but is tedious.
At the end of the process, your spouse will have a meeting with a US Counsulate in Mexico. And yes, she would have to return to Mexico and run the risk of not being able to come back. |

It is not automatic after marriage, there is a procedure. If you do the research yourself, which you can do, the fees will total less than $1000 and the time will be a couple years.
If you get an attorney...then you will pay through the nose (and it is unnecessary - provided you follow the guidelines). |
