Militarizing the border would be a good start.
A wall similar to what they had in Germany would work well.
Getting rid of the incentives and deporting the criminals who break into our country would be a good deterant as well. |

I don't know how to answer the question. I dislike it when anyone breaks the law--especially when the lawbreaker has a contemptuous attitude toward the rules.
On the other hand, some desperate guy trying to make a better life for his family does not qualify as a scofflaw.
I know that your country (the US) still has capital punishment, even though it is rarely imposed. Some answerers who talk about shooting people sneaking in would do well to remember that border-jumping is not a captial offence.
For that matter, you know as well as I do that American police are not allowed to shoot a lawbreaker unless there is a threat to the life or safety of the officers themselves or innocent bystanders.
Those who advocate a violent, lethal, answer to a problem should be ashamed of themselves.
By the way, we have the same problem with illegals in Canada--but they claim phoney-baloney refugee status and end up being allowed to stay on "unenforceable deportation orders".
A lot of these phoney-baloney "refugees" are Americans, and often they have the law after them at home. Do you want us to start shooting Americans? Then don't talk about shooting Mexicans driven by economic desperation. |

The truth is...there is none. In the states where the border has been reenforced the immigrants have moved to more dangerous crossing zones and methods which have led to a higher occurrence of death. Unfortunately, the prospect of dying does not deter other immigrants from attempting to cross in the same manners.

A 50' greased wall above ground and a 50 ' below ground wall with listening devices. Also manned gun towers with 50 caliber machine guns in them.
Then we need to get well qualified Border Patrol and US Army personnel to man the towers. Their background should be checked regularly to make certain that they are not letting illegals in and getting bribed to do so.
We should make a half mile waste land (no mans land if you like) along the border.
There is absolutely no reason why we should not have secure borders like most of the rest of the world does. |

What needs to be done is having a better system that is equal to all set into place so they can enter legally. Putting a wall on the Mexican border isn't going to stop illegals from entering. We can not put up barracades at every border, every shore, we certainly can not put a barrier in the sky. What does that say to the other countries who look at us? We cannot change the government of another country, we cannot get ours in place. There is not going to be any sort of good barrier at the Mexican border, they will find a way around it. |

Physical fences/walls can be defeaten easily, so they're not the best option for borders.
For the USA, having Interstate Highways at the Canadian-USA border, the Mexico-USA border, and even between states would be a better idea, it would allow the following things:
- it will allow people (including their border patrols) in to move freely in their own territory, and therefore also their ease of inspecting borders
- anyone who cross a highway will know on how hard it is to cross a highway, especially a busy one, a multiple lanes one, and even multiple highways
- anyone crossing a highway is more visible than an ordinary person, therefore can be more easily noticed
- multiple resting area at the highways can also double as guard posts
- highway patrols double as border patrols
Imagine that, a barrier system that will also double as a method of transportation.
Also if the USA want to reduce its land border, it could always annex both Canada and Mexico. |

I think it would help if the minutemen wouldnt be out there setting off motion sensors so border patrol can actually do their job but I think they should have those unmanned flying drones that fly around but its kind of funny to me when people dont even know their geography...they say they need 800 miles of fence when the border is actually 2100 miles... |

A good barrier isn't going to keep them out. They'll just find another way to sneak in. What should be looked at is what can be done with the immigration system to ensure that no one has to look at illegal immigration as a second choice. Such as lowering the fee for processing ( and no, not for free, sorry guys. I knew you'd get a kick out of falsely accusing me of wanting that.), getting rid of the uncessary red tape, etc. Get rid of the immigration quota too, it's unnecessary since it was in place post 9-11. |

we need to partner w the mexican govt on this! we can provide books on applying here sent to mexico, any one who desires to try and understand the english language and learn to pledge themselves to us is welcomed.. one look at mexican border towns will tell u why the mexicans want to be here! so i say educate them in mexico, allow a certain amount in yearly, and as for the illegals now that are here, again educate them! give them a chance to learn the american ways thru night schools that they pay for! Education is the only way |

legalize immigration. then you won't have anymore "illegal" immigants.
there, problem solved.
(i'm serious. immigrants make this country great. we're all immigrants or descended from immigrants. we need to allow people the same opportunities today as our forefathers had. plus, if you legalize them, then you can make sure that they are accounted for and pay taxes and all so forth. it may get a bit more crowded here, but we've still got plenty of room. and i don't exactly see native-born americans volunteering to do the jobs that illegal immigrants take (farming, janitorial work, meatpacking factories, dishwashers, etc).
it's just basic supply and demand. eventually the numbers of immigrants will even out as the US becomes more crowded and there are fewer opportunities left for new immigrants.
i also believe in the other way around. we americans should have the right to emigrate OUT of the US into other countries. that way it can all even itself out in the end.
right now we have free trade of goods. we need to have free and open borders too if we are to have real globalization. |
