Its the proverbial carrot we dangle in there face....Its called money....They seek it, to eat, for example? Trust me, they dont want to come here any more than we want them. But they have no other choice. Either starve, or go risk your life and find a better life in another country...

We have long advertised the American Dream - work hard, live well.
That is why people have been coming to this country for generations. Now we export our movies and television shows. People in other parts of the world might not be sophisticated enough to realize that these are "shows" not reality. If you heard, as people of my grandparents generation did, that the streets were paved with gold or that there was a golden mountain here - all for the asking - then you'd come also.
People who have been living in a community without hope will go to a place where hope is alive: USA.

Population and economic pressures at home drive them here. The Reagan administration eliminated foreign aid money for family planning so the population boom started in Latin America. Their populations started to grow faster than their economies, so they come here. This is a perfect example of what conservatives call "the law of unintended consequences", but it seems pretty forseeable to me.

1.much of California used to be Mexico. MANY OF THE FIRST AMERICANS ARE MEXICAN.
2. many speak the language.
3.close to home.
4. families are starving there and they are willing to risk their lives to work like dogs and live in horrible slums for just enough to keep their families form starving to death.
REMEMBER CORPORATIONS AND BUSINESSES AND SLUMLORDS ARE THE ONES seriously PROFITING and encouraging them to come to be the cheep labor and don't have to pay work comp ssi taxes etc on illegals huge cost savings fro the business at USA expense.. not the immigrants they are just not dying usually/sometimes. slumlords can pack 20 immigrants in overcharge for filth and squalor no illegals one can report them. so standards go down and low cost housing not avail to USA citizens. business of slum lording to illegals is very profitable.

5. they are told this is the land of opportunity and civil rights. and while it used to be..many arrive survive all the risks to be disappointed but cant afford to go home either.
6. we are the land of immigrants . UNLESS YOU ARE AMERICAN INDIAN OR MEXICAN YOU TOO ARE DESCENDED FROM AN IMMIGRANT.

7. want to stop illegal immigration? fine the companies and slumlords who profit and encourage and don't pay the taxes medical work comp etc..... they lure here with promises then take advantage of desperate people want and need to work. make businesses who hire pay costs to send them home and pay back taxes medical costs work comp etc. IT WILL STOP AND THOSE WHO MADE THE ILLEGAL AND HUGE PROFITS WILL PAY FOR COSTS TO SOCIETY.
