The American Dream is about leaving behind whatever you were or weren't in your home country. None of that matters in the United States. What matters is your ambition, talent, and hard work. People of very humble beginnings who wouldn't have had a chance anywhere else became successful here. There are no monarchs or aristocrats here. You can be what you want and do what you want and nobody tells you what your place is. The US is about escaping the poverty and worthlessness present in other parts of the world.

When the phrase was coined it meant, a house and garden, a white picket fence, a paying job, a car, a wife and 2.5 kids and a dog!

The dream, as I understand it, is the ability to better yourself, make more money and be happy, so that your children have a better future and live a more prosperous life than you had.

The American Dream is for each and every person to be responsible for improving themselves into a position where they are proud of their accomplishments.
The American Dream life is where they did it all by themselves and earned every dollar they have. They deserve praise for their hard work and dedication. Living American Dream is something to be proud of. Wanting the American dream means nothing until you are successful.

Everyone who wants to be rich, and accepts money they did NOT actually work hard to get, is NOT living the American Dream.

It is about working hard and becoming the person you want to be. its obtaining a life dream such as moving into a big house or buying that car you want. it is starting at the bottom and working your way to the top and being all you can be.

I believe the original meaning was that through hard work and the freedom to achieve whatever you want through a capitalist system that you will live better than your parents did.

A good example is Mexican immigrants. Mexico is a poor country. Immigrants come here and work hard, maybe two or three jobs, to put their children through college and therefore, their children make a better living.

And the freedom is that every single person regardless of race or gender have this opportunity.

I think for me, the American Dream, would be quality of life....Sure its nice to have stuff, but stuff doesn't buy happiness....People in this country are so caught up with "keeping up with the Jones", they fail to understand real happiness....That is love of life, family and God...

Wingshooter is correct, especially about home ownership. The phase has evolved since it was "coined" to include freedom and basic human rights.

Proud to be an AMERICAN
It's whatever you want it to be - here you have the freedom and the opportunity to fulfill your desires.

The dream to be able to live how ever you see fit. Worship who you pick, work the job you want, have the home you want. You just have to work for it all. Unlike China here you are not told how many childern you can have. So it is manly the freedom to do as you want with your life.

The AMerican Dream is that you can accomplish anything here of you work for it.

It does not mean living off of the hard work of others.

life liberty and the persuit of happyness.

thats is basicaly it.

after all that it gets kind of complacated but the best way to explain it would be you should be able to do what you want with what you have as long as it does not harm others.

lei
It's all about material things... owning a house, owning a car, being able to afford entertainment... and having enough time off of work to enjoy those things.

smartypants909
The American Dream is to own a nice house, with a beautiful wife and 2 children, two cars in the garage, take a vacation every summer at the summer house, it means to have it all.

Anne
Most Americans want to be wealthy, but most will settle for a well paying job, good schools for their children, vacation now and then, safe cities, and owning their own homes.

It wasn't for people 'outside of America' it is the dreams Americans hope to live in their country. Mexicans should have the 'Mexican Dream' etc.

Funny, the thumbs down. Look at when it was coined. It was a self-poll on what OUR people wanted.
