Different political systems, different values, different political cultures.
Canada remained a member of the British Empire, we gained independence through the Statute of Westminster, a peice of British legislation, not by having a war.
It is generally believed that; Canadians are more collective in nature and Americans more independent, Canadians have less of a fear of big government, Canadians climate is harsher (when the entire country is considered. Also, a key element of Canadian culture that is obviously not present in American culture is the Canadian tendency towards anti-americanism, many Canadians define their culture by describing the differences between themselves and their neighbours to the south.
Theres also the whole, two official languages thing. |

The two seem similar but are pretty different. The values and culture of each are different. The government systems are different as are the people in each. On the surface they look the same, but are in fact quite different. |

When the U.S. was fighting for the right to be free from England their was a class of people who did not want to be free from England (I believe it was the Whigs and the Torries) or they were complacent or indifferent. The Whigs kicked the torries out of the U.S.A. and created Canada. I lived in Canada for 13 years. The people are very friendly, but also very complacent. They are still North Americans (as we are) but they are still under England and the Queen. |

they are both AMERICAN in the sense they are both in North America. Canadians are from the country called Canada, "Americans" are from the United States of America. their name comes from their COUNTRY name, not the continent. Most people go by their 'country's name, not their continent name, hence American. The USA was settled by English speaking people, so we speak English, Canada was also, although there are a lot of French there also. Most people in both 'countries' are from European ancestry many are Native to their country, such as Native American or First People. Cultures in both country's are from European and Native people blending their cultures. |
