Minimum wage is designed for high school students, and people new to the work force. Very few people stay on minimum wage for any length of time before they are bumped up or promoted. |

I believe minimum wage varies from state to state and city to city due to the cost of living . http://www.dol.gov/esa/minwage/america.htm |

About 3 years ago in a class I took it was said that a person must make $11/hour to live comfortably. It's definitely gone up since then. |

If they didn't tax you on top of that ...you might be able to live in a house with others, eat peanut butter and jelly ...and take a bus wherever you go.
Course after the tax, forget it. You'll have to steal or work serveral jobs more. 18 hours a day might be able to live after taxes.
Huh! Kinda like slavery isn't it? |

Minimum wages are set by each state. Living on it depends on the person's lifestyle, but it is probably difficult-to-impossible to live on just one minimum-wage job, which is why so many people have more than one and so many married couples BOTH work. |

Most state is still 5.15 I know that in ohio it is 7.00 now which is still not enough to buy gas, eggs and milk. What is sad about this goverment is you would make more money being on welfare and recieving food stamps then going out and getting a job for those wages. =( |

its $7.15 here in MI and it will raise to $7.40 in July. I highly doubt you could support anyone except yourself on that. |

Well, the minimum wage is near to nothing, there was a documentary about two people that lived an american life and started with nothing. They both tried to live off $500 a week, as the average wage is $250.
They failed although they had no children and lived the bare minimum; No warm meals and an empty room for a flat.
They went over budget by $200 after just 6 days. |

The minimum wage in the US, regardless of state, is in essence a starvation wage. And the fact that prices are going up with no corresponding increase in wages across the board is essentially a wage cut. US bosses and politicians are doing the best they can to create third world conditions right here. They would pay you nothing if they could get away with it. And on top of that, they will make you jump through hoops and humiliate yourself with drugtests and background checks just to get their lousy, wage-slave jobs. The US labor market is bad and only getting worse. I would recommend anyone moving here to work to get in contact with a labor union and organize. |

a person would have a hard time living on minimum wage only.
Also is not guarantee that a person would have 40 hours a week of work. |

It depends on the state. Here in PA it's $7.15 an hour. I make $8.50 and hour, 40 hrs a week, and I'm JUST scraping by...so no....I don't expect that anyone could live on minumun wage, your paycheck would go entirely into your gas tank. |

It changes from state to state. A person would live a very meager life on it.
Minmum wage in California is 8$ an hour. |

In GA it is $5.15 an hour and I dont think anyone could live on that. |

The Federal minimum wage is now $6.25 raising to $7.00 by next year I believe. Individual states can have higher wages but not lower. No a person can't live on it unless it's a second job or they live with other ppl. |

I think in MA its around $8, and no you cant live on minimun wage |

It's doable if it were a full 40 hour a week job, but would be extremely tight to the point of paying for nothing beyond the necessities. It's not realistic though and would be a horrible lifestyle. More likely is either two people in the house working, working more than 40 hours, or a second job.
The good news is that plenty of entry level jobs pay more than minimum wage. |

The minimum wage as of 07-30-08 will be $6.55/hr.
This is sufficient to live on in some cases but not all. What State you live in and what part of that state will have a lot to do with it. How many hours you work will also play into the equation. Is the person alone or with children, or a non-working significant other also matter.
Here in South East Texas, there are places where a single person can rent a safe place to live and have money for food and other necessities while working for minimum wage, full time. |
