What is your opinion authorities captured 687 illegal aliens AZ in a 24-hour period last week?

NOGALES, ARIZ. -- Along a rugged stretch of the Mexican border here in southern Arizona, U.S. authorities captured 687 illegal immigrants in a 24-hour period last week, three times the number captured near San Diego. During the past eight months, agents have apprehended 168,000 migrants along this sector of the border.
The border crossers are so determined, and so impervious to a long-running buildup of federal agents and technology, that few here think President Obama's recent decision to dispatch 1,200 National Guard soldiers and $500 million will make much difference.
"I doubt it, frankly," said Don Severe, a vocal opponent of illegal immigration who favors stronger measures, including certain incarceration. "It sounds good, but what are they going to do? We have a very serious problem."
Arizona, home of a controversial new law that makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally, has become the leakiest portion of the nearly 2,000-mile border. The continuing flow of illegal immigrants, compounded by a rise in narcotics traffic and the slaying of an Arizona rancher, perhaps by a border crosser, has triggered a fresh fight over immigration policy, animating activities on both sides of the debate.
Thousands of opponents of the Arizona law, known as SB 1070, were expected to march through the streets of Phoenix on Saturday, demanding federal immigration reform. Meanwhile, led by Sen. John McCain and Gov. Jan Brewer, Republican politicians here are calling for stricter border security measures while waiting for the law -- broadly popular in Arizona but facing significant legal challenges -- to take effect.

Yes, it is an invasion, and the Federal government has an obligation under the Constitution to protect the states from invasion, an obligation the Federal government is not meeting. |

The AZ law is not strict enough. If the illegal immigrants faced the possibility of being shot, they may rethink their journey across the border. |

They should capture more than that, and do away with them for good. They have no business being in America. |

I don't know if the violence has escalated enough to activate Marshall law, But it would be good idea to have border patrol on all sides of Az, and then clean house. There should be a very big military presence in Az, Tx and southern Ca. There has to be a way to limit or cease the re-entry of deported criminals of all levels. |

My opinon is that since there is no penalty, other than a free return trip to the motherland, there is no motivation for them to stop. So a penalty needs to be applied. They should be incarcerated in a gulag located in Death Valley. |

Immigrants from Canada can openly pass through Portland border which is mostly unguarded and unbothered by federal immigration authorities.
Reasons for these immigrants coming here are understandable though not admirable. He is just looking to work for 40 hours at a higher salary; though back home he has no problems of insecurity or family or education for his children.
These immigrants don’t want to buy a house or have a credit card and not even a movie-rental membership; thus no way contribute to US economy. In some instances, where these workers were injured, they had to do their own stitching of wounds as they could not afford medical costs. US feels that their goals and conduct is selfish to say the least. He takes health insurance from Canada but needs green card in US. He returns to BC, just six hours drive away. These workers are ready to work at fraction of the salary that a US citizen would lawfully get.
Currently about 70,000 undocumented Canadians work in the United States. US citizens feel that it is both a confirmation of the failures of U.S. current immigration policies and a testament to the absurdity of attempts to change them. The immigration debate in this country is, in fact, no longer a debate.
Border agents have no reason to stop such workers. Unlike Mexican citizens who enter the United States, Canadians aren't required to obtain visas. (They have six-month "visa waivers" instead.)
What is opportunity for such workers is fury for Americans who would like to build bigger, tougher, more expensive walls along the southern border. |
