What kind of visa do I need to make non paid volunteer work in the United States?

I'm travelling to the US with my family as tourists (I'm from Argentina), but I'm planning to stay for a month after they leave, making some volunteer work on ornithology. This is a non- paid position.
Is the tourist visa (B) enough? Or do I have to apply to a Exchange Visitor Visa (J)?
