They should apply for a green card, pass an english test, be fingerprinted and have a set amount of time to obtain employment and be required to KEEP employment |

People who burglarize a residence - break in and enjoy someone else's property - are sent to prison for their crime.
And yet, people who break into our country and enjoy our freedoms are the subject of a discussion about how to make their crime just go away and be welcomed as a member of the household.
Hm. I don't get it. |

I think they should go back to their country of origin and apply LEGALLY. Then they would be more than welcome. |

Take the LEGAL route. There is no excuse for coming here illegally. Learn English and US History.
When I went to Mexico on vacation I didn't expect them to cater to my needs, I spoke enough Spanish for them to understand me. I respected them and their cultures and way of living. Why? It's respect. Simply put, when in Rome do as the Romans.

1. Go back to their own country. 2. Apply for a visa to the USA. 2. Apply for a social security card and get a job. 3. Apply for citizenship. 4. If denied, go home when the visa expires.
WHY? Because that's what EVERY OTHER immigrant from the rest of the world has to do. That's what our law already sets down for immigration. It's not FAIR for us to give a short and easy path to those who have already jumped ahead of all the other immigrants from all the other countries who want to come to this country and make a life for themselves. What makes the immigrants from Mexico and South and Central America more important than immigrants from Asia or Africa or Europe or anywhere else?
I sincerely don't understand why a Mexican immigrant should be granted special status that a Nigerian immigrant can't get---especially when that Nigerian is trying desperately to do all that the law requires of him and the Mexican just jumps the border. Our country should be ashamed to allow this. |

I do not think they should become citizens. I think they should go home. They are crooks & liars. Crooks- did they break into the US? Yes! Do they pay taxes? No
Liars - do they get assumed names? Do they drive without valid license? Do they say they are citizens?
They should go home, apply to come legally, learn language, take citizenship test & pass it, take oath, pay taxes, vote & be proud to be American. OR they can just go home!.
Anyone citizen or green card holder needs to pay taxes or go to the pokey (jail). |

Why should they get to become citizens just because they're already here? How is that fair to every other immigrant following the rules? I think those are the people that deserve to be here, because it means enough to them to work for it. The very first thing illegal immigrants do when they enter our county is break a law. That's not a good first step to becoming a good citizen. |

all the above, but you have to start in your own country. good luck. |

1) LEAVE.
2) DON'T come back. Because you didn't have enough respect to follow our laws the first time, your family deserves to starve in Mexico. You should be banned from EVER being considered for citizenship. |

Go back to their native country and return legally. Then following the rules and laws and as a legal visitors spend the time to learn the language of land, English, get a job, pay taxes, eventually take the test, and then become a citizen.
NO ONE should just be granted citizenship because they did not follow the rules and come into the USA illegally. My grandparents followed the rules and so should everyone.
Otherwise, have the rules. |

At the very LEAST, learn the language! I think that's... disrespectful. Don't come into the U.S and expect hand-outs if you're not even willing to speak the language! |

What do I think they need to do to become citizens?
Well, following our laws would be a HUGE start. Coming here illegally is a huge strike against them. I don't think that anyone that chooses to break our laws should be rewarded for their "efforts". If they choose to come here illegally, then they choose to blow their chances at becoming legal citizens of this country. Allowing them to only enforces the ideal that if they come here and disregard the laws they don't like, and they will eventually get what they want. |

There is already a system. It just needs tweaking, and more funding and personnel since there are so many that wish to come to this country. My wife is foreign and I went through a lot to get her to become a legal resident of the US, but there was a reason. It helps with medical, criminal, and financial dependancy checks. If she wishes to become a citizen, she must speak English well enough and pass US History. She already speaks English better than most Americans (and she spoke none when we met). Her history needs work though. She doesn't want to give up her citizenship, and doesn't need to since as a permenant resident, she has almost all the same rights and only has to renew once every 10 years, which is just some paperwork and a moderate fee. |

enter the country legally, try to learn the traditions and history of the country, get a job, pay taxes, speak english. This is what every us citizen should do, not just the immigrants |

There are legal channels immigrants should take to become citizens, but people who blame the problem of illegal immigration on Mexicans are being ignorant. Research the effects of NAFTA on the Mexican economy and you will learn why the number of illegal immigrants has increased so sharply. |

Go home and apply like other immigrants, play by the rules. |

Why should this be the first topic of debate? Shouldn't stopping the flow that is ruining our schools and closing our hospitals take priority? And then reversing the damage done?
Who is more important to our government? Who is our government supposed to protect? Didn't they take an oath to support our laws and the constitution?
Yakngrl, so get rid of NAFTA. That doesn't change the impacts on US. |

1) Speak English - it's the official language of our country. I'm sick and tired of reading thru all the Spanish crap to get to the English part.
2) Either be deported or pay a large fee to stay here
3) Get in line FREAKIN BEHIND all the other people who are following the proper processes to become citizens
4) Quit drinking and driving! It may be socially acceptable in whatever god-forsaken place you came from, but it's not here!
5) Quit sending all the money you make to other countries. What's made here stays here!
6) Don't slaughter your animals in apartment building bathrooms (long story on that one)
7) Stop living with 25 other people from 10 different families in a single-family dwelling. |

Learn English before anything.
I just can't believe how offended Hispanics get when someone says that they need to quit watching TV in Spanish. They take it as an insult.
****, I hear white folks speaking better Spanish that us Hispanics. Why can't we learn how to speak English ourselves. It's the official language of the United States after all. |

1. Go back to country of origin and re-apply thru proper channel. Can't see how tho, if you're illegal in the first place. Don't expect any sympathies. Prove your worth.
2. Learn & appreciate the adopted country's way of life. You can't expect to live exactly like the country you're from. Else what's the point of going to another country to live. When in Rome, do as the Romans. |

They should never become citizens because they are criminals. That is what illegal means. |

First off they should have to pay a fine for breaking our law, go back home, learn English, take the same test that the legal immigrants have to take before coming here. undergo an extensive background check and be able to prove their identity.. They should not be allowed federal assistance if you can't make it on your own we don't want you. I for one am tired of flipping the bill for them so that they can over populate our schools over tax our welfare system cause our hospitals to close, hospitals can't turn them away and can't afford to stay open without money.
This way the American Citizens who may find themselves in need of assistance won't be turned down.
Once they do get here they must also prove that they have a job which shows taxes are being taken out and that they are paying taxes like all of the rest of us
If you serve in our military i think automatic citizenship should be granted |

1. Speak English
2. Pass an exhaustive background check.
3. Be self-supporting (no govt. handouts)
4. Pass a detailed test on history and civics.
5. Take the oath of citizenship. |

Please, PLEASE pay ATTENTION!!!! No one can go straight from being and "illegal" to becoming a US citizen!!! First you have to become a lawful permanent resident. In the grand scheme of things, it's relatively few who can do this -- present laws considered. Next, generally speaking (because there are exceptions) you have to be a permanent resident for a certain amount of time (3 or 5 years depending on your particular case), you have to be a person of good moral character during that time and you have to speak and write in English.
So tell me, is there anything wrong with the requirments as they currently are in palce? |
