It's estimated that about 3/4 of illegal immigrants already pay tax. Ever since the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act set high penalties for employers that didn't withhold social security and other payroll taxes, employers have been doing a good job at getting social security numbers and withholding payroll taxes (social security, medicare, etc.). The employer isn't responsible if the SS# is fake but they have to collect the info and the $. Obviously the SS numbers are fake, but the money that is collected is not. The biggest pile is close to $600 billion and growing in the Social Security administrations "earnings suspense file."
If the intention is to grow tax revenue, then making illegals legal won't do much. |

Having more taxpayers doesn't equate to more tax revenues when 99% of the new taxpayers added are poor, uneducated, disease-ridden freeloaders.

I'd say that since they'd still be taking out more than they put in, that it would be a terrible idea.
It costs $10,000/year to educate a child (national avg). Do you really think an non-skilled or low skilled worker will pay that much in tax? Not hardly. In fact, with the Earned Income Credit and the Child Tax Credit, they would actually MAKE money at tax time (meaning their credits would be larger than their total tax, so they'd get a check even if they underpaid their tax).
I'd also say that flooding the labor pool like that will drive wages down. Basic supply and demand.

Roman D: you're hilarious! You accuse us of being 'ignorant' yet you offer zero facts to refute our position. You lamely accuse us of racism.... so tell us, when did 'illegal' become a race? |

This just would never happen.
They don't pay taxes...other than sales tax.
They don't pay medical bills at the Emergency Room.
They don't pay (a whole) rent, they live 10-20 to a room.
They don't pay for insurence (prey you don't get hit by one, they'll run)
They don't pay. Thats one more reason to not want them here to begin with, but there are many nore. |

if our government would do what we pay them to do, this topic would never come up........
as far as I'm concern, all illegals should be deported.
there no other country in the world would except Americans the way we except illegals.
America need a working immigration policy now. |

If something is earned it is more valuable then if it was given, like citizenship. |

It's going to reduce our average per capita income and turn all of our cities into something like mexico city and San Diego. We might lose our first world nation status because of that. |

That is not a good argument. We need to deport them. |

I would say this: They entered our country illegally, thus braking the law. They should be punished for that first. They are trespassing every day they stay in our country illegally, they should also have to answer to that. Even we, as American citizens, cannot brake the law without having to pay restitution, why should they get a free pardon of their crimes. There are legal ways of entering our country and becoming citizens. They should be held accountable for their transgressions, then, maybe then, should they be given the chance to enter our country and become a legalized citizen. Can I go to their country and commit a crime or crimes and expect to be pardoned? I do not care if it is one person or 12 million, breaking the law, is just that, its breaking the law. Let's hold them accountable first, then lets talk. |

It would still piss me off... These illegal immigrants would be getting away with commiting a crime and also being rewarded for it....You, me and every other Legal citizen do not get rewarded for commiting crimes, so why should they??? Maybe we should all start behaving like illegal immigrants... that might get our point across in Washington, but I seriously doubt it..
The only reason illegal immigration is supported is because of greed. |

If they are illegal they need to leave. |

the only taxes they pay are sales tax on a pack of gum
I think it is a desperate ploy and when you consider they take 3 dollars in services for every dollar they allegedly put in its a no win for the United States |

I'd say they were smoking something that aint legal....
What they they will pay into the system will be so little as compared to what they will take or use...heres a few links to prove my point:

poor people with little education don't make enough money to pay taxes they get an earned income credit. example they pay in $200. in taxes with the earned income credit they would get back in the realm of $900 to $1300 dollars multiply that by 12 to 21 million you get the idea. the reality is they will always get more then they pay in. we have enough of our own poor and those in need of some form of government and we don't need interlopers. |

They should go back home, and try to enter legally. Problem solved. |

Here is my view on this point, of a much larger issue.
An illegal immigrant who isn't willing to apply for US Citizenship is still an illegal immigrant.
An illegal immigrant who is willing and follow through to the end to apply for US Citizenship, is then a US Citizen.
Just to have a few more tax payers?! Now what does that say about that person who is suppose to be a servant to the United States of America People? |

so much bigoted narrow minded answers permeate this site with this question, its a wonder why i even bother replying.
for all the ignorance out in this room, you all sure think you know a lot about immigration. if that time spent on spewing out hatred could be used on doing some productive research or at least reviewing the history of the lives of other immigrants of the united states to realize the great many parallels of the conditions these so-called "illegal Mexican immigrants" had to face, some people like the people providing the answers, can actually learn something factual and benefit from the information.
then again, why hope for that when that would require people to actually sit back and actually think, instead of opening their know-it-all egotistical paternalistic condescending mouths to make themselves feel better about their own selves from the plight of the lesser classes.
inevitably, we as a world society are opportunistic beings who, for the most part, when actually progressing from the lesser beginnings from which we all started, manage to put down those less fortunate than we.
speaking on behalf of the educated minority, i pity the ignorance of the status quo. |
