I would say that the 1920s was the era where the crackdown on immigration began. Quotas were established to limit the numbers of people from certain countries. To be specific, 1921 is the year that an emergency quota act was first put into place. The Immigration Act of 1924 limited the number of immigrants to 150,000 -- based on national origin. The Immigration and Nationality act of 1965 discontinued this practice and established a visa system based on factors such as one having family in the US. |
