I think all subjects should be taught in English. I think schools should teach foreign languages to our English speaking students so they will have a better understanding of the world we live in.

From reading your question, you need to learn English as well.

It is good if it is done by the pupils own "free will"....I speak 2 other languages besides english...I chose to learn them....however, when I go to Brazil, I speak portuguese as that is the main language there....I dont expect them to speak english as I am only a guest in their country...same as for here in the U.S.. If someone comes to visit here or moves here, dont expect people to kowtow to you...learn OUR language...it's a matter of respect and courtesy.

Its obsurd. In this world today, if you want to be successful at anything, you MUST speak English. English has become the universal language. You cannot hold a job in any type of aviation in any country (except to mop the airport floors) unless you can speak English. Global exchanges of stock occurs primarily in English. ESPECIALLY if you are in a predominantly English-speaking country, you should learn to speak English. Dual language programs are nothing more than a way to bend over and cater to lazy freeloaders who do not care about succeeding.

I think being able to speak more than one language is invaluable in today's society. Schools should encourage students to learn languages. Quite apart from the business angle, I learned French at school. I went to a football tournament in the Netherlands, which entailed travelling through Belgium. We got confused with the timetables and I was deputed to go to the information kiosk. I believe that, because I began the conversation in French, I received better service, simply because I made the effort.

I think they shouldn't offer it to foreigners and immigrants and not offer it to our own children. They are creating a bilingual society and refusing to educate OUR children to be competitive in it.

When they graduate middle school, OUR children are the only children in the room who are NOT bilingual, because their language classes have been cut to provide ESL and intervention for those illegally here and their children.

You know it's funny, if everyone that immigrated to the United States wanted us to learn their language, we would all be required to learn about fifteen to twenty different languages. Where does this assinine behavior stop. Anyone that wants to immigrate to this country knows that we speak English. If they want to live here, they must accept our culture, not try to change our culture to theirs. It's just like the idea that we celebrate CHRISTMAS. We have that right because that's always the way that it has been. They can celebrate any holiday they want, how they want to and we have never had a problem with it. Come here to live LEGALLY, but leave our beliefs the HELL ALONE!!!

What is your opinion on it? ... I think it's something our school systems should teach. The world of tomorrow is going to be a multi-cultural one and kids at an early age should be encouraged to learn another language besides English.
....And like it or not, the USA is a nation where many languages are spoken, predominantly the Spanish language. It's almost necessary to know more than one language nowadays.
Frankly, most of the naysayers here should go back to school and learn proper English. Luckily, no one was going to tell my parents not to teach me Spanish. I now not only speak English and Spanish fluently, I also speak Italian fluently. When I have children, I don't care what the school system's stand on the issue is, but I plan on teaching them Spanish and Italian. No one is going to prevent me or tell me not to pass down to my children what is part of my heritage. It will also undoubtedly serve them in their favor to speak multiple languages, it opens many more doors than to those who only speak one language. I think most Americans are afraid at the thought that these illegal immigrant children will actually have a much better chance at landing a job than their own kids who only speak English. Americans are raising real dumb children who can't even locate the US on a world map, yet they ***** and whine when the school system wants to EDUCATE their children. Lighten up folks and try to remember that being bilingual will help your children in the world.

I think I live in the USA and we speak ENGLISH. I think if kids want to learn a second one then there should be a chose. Just because there is a Bunch of dumb illegals here who can't speak English doesn't mean we need to learn Spanish. If a Bunch of English speaking Americans went to Mexico do you think they would start making people speak English. NO they would make us learn Spanish.ONLY IN AMERICA!!!!

I could write a book on this! But here's some of the basics.

The "english" children will learn a second language. As they will be taught their core subjects in the other language, they may fall behind their english-only peers for a few grades. They do catch up, but if you move during that time you'll need to help your child catch up.

The english language learners (ELL) will learn their core subjects on a normal level, but will probably learn reading/writing in their native language, thus slowing their grasp of English.

At our 3rd grade event, I was surprised at how many ELL students still had accented English (after 3 1/2 years of American school). Generally, if you learn a language before age 10 or so, you'll learn a native version.

Some ELL proponents dislike this program because it teaches a 2nd language to the english students, and doesn't help the ELL kids that much. Others claim that this method is better than immersion (which they derisively call submersion) - I find that argument racist as it implies that only American kids can learn a second language by immersion, the immigrant kids are unable to do so.

Of course, on the other side of the table, many people feel that this program is just another form of catering to those who don't wish to assimilate.

In our school, it was touted as a new great program that would help all kids succeed. I questioned their testing methodology from the get-go (how can you know how well they've learned English if you didn't test them at the beginning to see where they started). Now I've learned that they've been switching kids out as they failed, in order to keep the scores up. But that's just my school.

Many schools are successful with this program - the only big thing to avoid is when the two groups come from vastly different socio-economic groups.

Bilingual people tend to be smarter, and better able to express themselves. That sounds like a great idea.

Complete BS ! Not only for our already compromised educational system..... but its setting these kids up for failure later on in life. If they can't speak English what will they be doing in 20 years. Washing dishes or picking vegetables. People think that were being xenophobic when we scream about learning English... but I have a college education and I struggle. I'm smart and I have a few valuable skills. How can these kids be expected to excell when they can't communicate ?

I do not like it.Who pays for these kids to go to school, with additional costs for bilingual educators? The U.S. taxpayer.
We are a nation of immigrants- true enough. But we cannot ignore the fact that illegal immigrants are an enormous burden on all of us.

All i have to say is when we go to their country or any other country they don't have or require their employees or kids to cater to us, so why all of a sudden are we catering to ILLEGAL immigrants, when they come to this country legally and start paying taxes just like I do the i can agree with the dual teachings

In the USA, at the federal level, there is no official language
But three US states are officially bilingual: Louisiana (English and French), New Mexico (English and Spanish), and Hawai'i (English and Hawaiian).
Three US territories are also bilingual: American Samoa (Samoan and English), Guam (English and Chamorro), and Puerto Rico (Spanish and English). One US territory is trilingual: Northern Marianas Islands (English, Chamorro, and Carolinian)
Furthermore, in Florida, at the municipal level, Hialeah recognises both English and Spanish while Miami recognises English, French Creole, and Spanish as official government languages.

So people that don't speak English aren't in the wrong.
Many countries are multilingual, for the better.

The USA is a diverse land, why should there only be one limited language?
In most countries, a foreign language is mandatory.
What's so 'evil' about that?

Well it is required to graduate in most high schools to take a foreign language. Here in Tenneessee it is spanish or french. This is only for college bound students though. So I am all for it, knowledge and understanding is power. As a way to communicate with people here Legally or Illegally just so they do not have to learn English NO!!!!
