do they have to change their social security number or can they keep their current one?

You keep the number but if your card says something like "not authorized to work unless approved by the INS", then you need to change the card. That service is available at the oath ceremony..Also get your passport pictures ready, the passport agency sometimes appears at the oath too and takes passport apps.
