When taking the new U.S. Citizenship test, do you have to say answers word for word?

Do they give you credit for the answer as long as they can tell you know what you are talking about, or are they so strict that you have to say it EXACTLY how it is in the book?

I think they give you credit for the answer. Its not wether you can quote it word for word from the book, but how you interpret the answer. As long as it means the same, you,re OK.

you do not have to know most ans verbatim, but when in doubt use their words.

I've never taken a citizenship test, but I've never heard of a test that requires an exact regurgitation.

You just have to know the answers.
For example:
Name the three branches of government:
Executive, Legislative and Judicial
Legislative, Judicial and Executive
Or any other combination of the three are acceptable.

Who is the president during the civil war?
Abraham Lincoln is acceptable
meat in your underwear Lincoln is not! (my wife couldn't remember Abraham but if you ask her about meat in her underwear: A bra ham Lincoln popped into her mind! She got a 100 on the test and A bra ham was on it!)

Good Luck!
