When you receive your social that says work only, does that mean its your SS # like any1 elses?

You know how US citizens have their own social number...well I got one when I applied for Green Card, but it says work use only. Is that the same as other people's or is it different? And if its different, when do I get the real one? after I get green card?

Work only meaning you need to have work permit such as EAD to use your current SS number. Once you get your green card, you need to apply new SS Card without written restriction and once you become US Citizen, you must update your status woth SSA also. |

When you get your Green Card it will be the same number, but it will not say, Valid Only with EAD. |

You get a "real" (unrestricted) one after you become a US citizen. |

It identifies you as person lawfully admitted to the United States on a temporary basis who has DHS authorization to work.
"Regular" Social Security cards are only issued to US citizens and eople lawfully admitted to the United States on a permanent basis. |

I am guessing you got a visa with a work permit, and they provided you with a social for that reason, but it is not supposed to be used for any other identification purpose and perhaps you cannot collect social security. That's my guess. |

Who gave you the card, was it sent from Social Security or did another company or person give it to you. Call the Social Security office in your city and talk to a representative. Good Luck |
