It closed and the larger Ellis Island depot opened. But really, there was pretty much open immigration. A few cities tried to restrict the Irish immigrants in the 1830s and 1840s but this largely did not happen.

Wide-scale government screening did not take place until the late 19th century at Ellis Island. This is because the Supreme Court ruled in 1875 that immigration is a federal responsibility. Also, there was an explosion in the number of immigrants that began arriving at this time and this was more noticeable because the economy was in the dumps. Coinciding with this period was the beginning of restrictive immigration/labor laws where certain immigrants were excluded (such as the Chinese).

Also, from a genealogy point of view, there are very little records that exist before the mid 19th century because a) shipping companies were not required to keep passenger records and b) there are no government records of their arrivals.

Now, there were quarantine stations -- especially because ships brought cholera, plague and other diseases. But these individuals eventually made it out into society or died beforehand.
