Some economists believe that if the nearly 12 million illegal immigrants were to leave the country, the results would be disastrous for the United States. Workers earning on the lower end of the pay scale would see their income rise since the supply of labor would shrink significantly. Even with higher wages, employers would still have difficulty finding workers to fill their vacancies due to the shortage of workers. Another downside is that the higher labor costs would be passed on to consumers, which would most likely result in a drop in overall retail spending. Local and state governments would see decreased spending in the area of social services like education and healthcare since there would no longer be 12 million immigrants in the United States to provide for. Some economists estimate that the savings would be in the billions of dollars. However, the United States government would also lose out on money that illegal immigrants contribute to Medicare and Social Security but that they are unable to collect due to their legal status.

Industries like construction, farming, food service, hotel and manufacturing would take a big hit. These are some of the most common industries worked by illegal immigrants. To attract domestic workers the wages would have to be increased. However, some places already have a tight labor market as it is. In addition, there are jobs that many domestic workers would not take even with higher wages. The types of jobs that require long hours under the sun and back-breaking labor are not popular among Americans. The jobs are highly undesirable and are considered to have no prestige or little if any. The reality is that many domestic workers in the United States do not want to work long hours, do tiresome work and break a sweat unless it is highly compensated. The majority of American workers would prefer to work in an office with air conditioning and do a job that is more prestigious.

Not having to carry a firearm anytime I leave the house is one. Oh paying MUCH less for my vehicle insurance. Oh how could I forget how cheaper my health insurance will be. Ah and I'll no longer be subsidizing civial services meant for those who pay for those services through taxes that are taken from the salaries of hard working legal citizens. First off we would not be having this conversation. Most of us clean our own house, watch our own kids and mow our own grass as for the job sector, I am sure lettuce as everyone is so fond of saying would raise but the cost of education, welfare and health care expenses would go down it would level itself out and citizens would take the place of those illegals. Every industry in the US is predominately filled with citizens..... Even the fruit pickers shocking I know, look into the labor statistics.

Given your statement, we should continue to condone fragrant disregard of our immigration laws? I can't buy that. Nor can I buy your allegation that the majority of Americans would prefer to work in an office...etc. Not true, friend. That's an insult to a huge number of hard-working Americans who don't happen to sit in air conditioned comfort in that "prestigious" job!
Somehow, I'm of the opinion that our country can, and will, survive without the continuing flood of illegals into our economy

The reality is, Americans were filling those jobs before businesses like construction, farming, food service, hotels, etc started to break the law and hire under the table cheap-slave paying wages to illegals-avoiding Federal taxes-both for their companies and the illegals who earned more money than you did because they have no tax liability, no FICA, not self-employment tax=while exporting all their US dollars back to Mexico!
Americans can't get these jobs because construction and other companies are happy paying nothing for 12 hour laborers who can't complain because they are here ILLEGALLY!

If you believe that employers have lowered costs to consumers because they can get cheaper labor by using immigrants, I have a bridge I would like to sell you. The inflationary prices have gone up, despite the lower cost of labor and the profits have become higher.

We could absorb a certain amount people in the United States, but 12 to 20 million is asking too much. Plus, if they are given citizenship once again, others will follow. Where will it end?

Construction, restaurant and other jobs are certainly popular with Americans. I know many people in this business, and they are furious at losing their jobs to low-paid immigrants.

Who makes up these false statements saying that Americans do not want restaurant or construction jobs? Americans will even work as domestic help, babysitting or taking care of the elderly. Prestige has nothing to do with it. Earning a living is what it is all about. Prestige doesn't put food on the table or buy the shoes for the schoolkids.

The only jobs that Americans usually can't handle is seasonal farm work. It is only temporary work, involves leaving home, and doesn't pay enough to support a family. The immigrants come in and lead a Nomadic existence, going from harvest to harvest. Perhaps they can do this, but many Americans can't leave their homes and families.

The only reason corporations are backing the Immigration Bill is because they want cheaper labor. The politicians back it because they want the votes. But please don't continue to spread around the fallacy that Americans don't want these jobs and that the economy would falter if the immigrants left.

In fact, American workers might have some money to spend, if the immigrants weren't taking the jobs. Our economy was much, much better before this crisis of Illegal Immigrants became a tsunami of cheap labor!

A lot of people would be in Middle class society due to pay raises and price raises. There are low risk prisoners who should be doing the jobs of illegals to pay their debt to society.

It is possible, but I really cannot see 12 million lettuce pickers. Lately I have seen more illegals in gangs and committing violent crimes. How many of them are lettuce pickers? Better idea, let them leave and see what happens to the crime rate. I just wish they had come here legally and we had sense enough to have a national language.

personally i think we'd be better off....isn't it funny we now have to have a passport to go into canada, mexico, and the carribean...and can't go till we're approved for a passport but yet illegal immigrants can come over here....

Bottom line is that we can choose whether or not to buy the few products that would rise in price if they leave.

If they stay we have no choice but to pay a LOT more in taxes to support the benefits they do use.

A lot of people assume or outright lie about their use of our social programs and benefits. They go to our schools, our hospitals, use our welfare, food stamps, etc.

An illegal has 2 choices. Commit ID theft and pay taxes. Or pay no taxes and use our services anyway.

Whichever toute they take it hurts the average taxpayer far more to have them here.

We were running just fine, with the invasion of immigrants came the sub standard wages. The savings may be on the labor side but the ramifications of all the influx of immigrants and their demands on our society and financial ,legal and medical not to mention all other systems far outweighs their cheap labor status..Just my opinion....Penny wise and pound foolish

What it sounds like you are saying is that Americans are spoiled . They expect higher wages without working for it. I agree with that. Nobody is entitled to have what kind of job and wages they want , you have to earn it.
