A passport is issued by your home country to prove you are a citizen of that country.
A visa is issued by a country to allow a visitor from another country to enter their country. A visa is stamped or attached to the visitor's passport.

So, that someone will need both.

Then they will have to apply for citizenship.

Sounds like you have some good answers but my take is; a passport is used when traveling out of the country. In the US we didn't have to use it before to go to Canada or Mexico. The newer law (for a few yrs now) says we need it. Even on cruise ships. A visa is needed for a certain length of time in a country and if you are going to be working in that country. The government links should clear it up for you.

Well legally you can't come here without some sort of visa. But you will need a passport as well.

You will have to have a passport to enter the US. Depending on where you come from, you may need a visa to visit the US. In order to live here, you will definitely need a visa, but it is a different kind of visa. It's an immigrant visa vs. a non-immigrant visa.

Immigrant visas are only given in certain situations. I most cases you will have to be sponsored by a family member or an employer. You can also come as a student where your university will "sponsor" you, but that is only for the length of your schooling.

The family member sponsoring you must be an immediate relative. In other words, your mother or father if you are unmarried and under the age of 21, your child over the age of 21, or your brother or sister, though in the last instance, you will have to wait for a visa number to become available.

The family member can be a permanent resident, but again you will have to wait for a visa number to become available, and in many cases we are talking about 5 or 6 years waiting.

If you want to live in the US for good you will need first a greencard. google USCIS and look up their information on greencards whether you are eligible for any. In addition to a valid greencard you will need your passport.
