Which of the following is not among the reasons that Mexican immigrants were for a long time slow to become American citizens?
A Most lived very close to Mexico and remained identified with that country.
B Many returned frequently to Mexico to visit home and family there.
C Almost all Mexican immigrants remained migrant farm laborers unable to settle down in cities.
D It was often considered a badge of dishonor to adopt American citizenship.

could it be E. if they became American Citizens then they lose all right of Mexican citizenship, like losing all property rights, rights to vote in Mexican elections, lost of all inheritance rights and legal right to property and items from Mexican family members, if they have children after becoming a US citizen, the children had no right to Mexican citizenship, lose the right to visit or even live in Mexico ever again....
Would you be quick to change citizenship, if you were legally cut off from all your rights of American citizenship? |

All of them are correct. But D is a critical point. Many of those folks cannot make it through the back ground checks. Many of those folks have not learned anything by basic words in English, and cannot read or write. Many of those folks have accepted something close to a life of crime.
Further, they were not offered the opportunity to become citizens, and won't be offered the opportunity to become citizens. They are, in fact, an illegal construct of the Ag Business which was designed to maximize profits by using illegal aliens, and ignoring lots of OSHA rules and commandments of the State of California IRS, and the Federal IRS.
It is now.. it was then.. an illegal operation that should not have been allowed to exist. Because papers such as the Los Angles Times and the particularly the Sacramento Bee refused to report on the issue.. the issue was never allowed to move to adjudication... to court. The Sacramento Bee, the Fresno Bee, the Stockton Newspaper, the Modesto Newspaper, were owned by the McClatchy Newspapers.
http://www.mcclatchy.com/100/story/179.html
McClatchy Newspapers stopped publication of the illegal aliens issues, and has not allowed a discussion of those issues even today. Further, the McClatchy Newspapers have also moved into South Texas with the Agricultural Business, and into Florida.
I bring all of this to this post because the abuse of these workers was extreme. Those folks should have been put in cold dark dungeons for breaking those OSHA Laws.
I am sorry they are ... illegal aliens... and NOT Mexican Immigrants. The people we want to punish for their plight are the growers and the newspapers who conspired with the the criminal elements of the Ag Business.
The people we do NOT want to punish for the conduct of these crummy people in the Newspapers and Agricultural Business are the American Taxpayers who did not have any idea at all what was happening. |

My family is all from Mexico, and I've been living here for over ten years. So far as I have seen, people are proud when they or their relatives manage to get American citizenship, because it is such a hard thing to do.
However, American citizenship doesn't make them any less Mexican, so this is not a problem. |
