Who thinks it should be mandatory that minorities learn our language before becoming citizens?

I totally agree. This whole immigration thing is a mess. I love how they DEMAND we grant them citizenship when they are here ILLEGALLY!!

BTW, Miami should officially just become apart of Cuba. What's the point of being apart of USA--you need to know Spanish to survive. lol.

EXACTLY Why are we catering to these clowns printing everything in stores in both English and Spanish. If you don't have at least a working knowledge of English you shouldn't be here.

First I have to start saying to you that there is no perfect country or not perfect well-fare system. Second I am not born American, but I am American citizen and i did my test in English. I think that if this country is giving you so many opportunities the least you can do is learn the language. Also that will expand your opportunities of a better job, and a better life. I do think it should be mandatory the citizenship test in English but I also think is unfair to put elderly people to do the test in English, and now if they don't become citizens Social Security or Children's and Families cut their monthly checks. I think it should be mandatory for people till they are 65 years old, after that they should be able to choose in what language they wanted to be tested.

I Moved to the States from Germany 15 years ago...Nobody offered me any forms,applications or tests in GERMAN.I had to learn English so do people from poland,russia and other countries.i dont understand why mexicans have to get special treatment

Part of the citizenship test is every applicant has to prove they are able to read and write english.

I agree with that 100%- also, my grandmother is extremely sick yet can't get any disability money because she too owns a car (she doesn't even use it, it's older, and we use it for tasks such as hauling things from hardware stores, etc. if the things we are transporting can cause damage) and has her name on the two buildings we own. (My dad and aunt also own them, and we use the rent for her care.) I find it disgusting that someone who plops out 15 babies and doesn't speak English can get money yet someone who's family is struggling to take care of them can't get any help.

When I went to Germany I had to learn their language to work there, and to live more comfortable in the country..

To the one who said we cater way too much to them, I agree. If we went to their country they would expect us to learn their language.., and it would be only right..

I think by accommodating non-English speakers one is preforming a disservice to them by discouraging assimilation..

English has been the dominate language for the better part of this century..

i do and for a simple reason. every country has 3 things that coexist and without any one of them it cannot exist. these things are it's citizens, it's teritory and its language. so it seems only logical that the one requesting the citizenship should have some ideea about all 3 of them.

i'm a romanian and we basicly have the same problem. there is a quite numerous hungarian minority in romania and there are lots of them that don't speak romanian, but are romanian citizents by birth. i was in a hungarian majority once and went to this petrol station to buy somthing and no one in the store spoke romanian... i don't know if they don't speak it or won't speak it... i basically had to make like a mute to get wat i wanted.

also i lived for some time in denmark and it made all the difference in the world once i learned to speak danish. i was no longer seen as an "invader" there but as one of them, one who adopted their language habbits and lifestyle, ultimately i found myself adopted by them.

these are i think the best reasons why living in a foreign country should imply certain responsabilities like learning it's language

Minorities? You should have said people of non-English speaking countries. I do believe that the citizenship test is only in English. I dont think it is necessary for ANYONE to have to learn English. It is beneficial, but what about people that live in places like Laredo, where the majority speak Spanish? Should those that speak English have to learn Spanish by force?? All children are a blessing, people dont have children just to "pop out a citizen" they do it because they want a family. If you have a problem with the laws, then talk to your representative, you voted for him!

It already is mandatory ... people applying for citizenship have to undergo a test in English ... simple, admittedly, but a test nonetheless ....

That was straight out of THE INS handbook, and though there may be a few exceptions, EVERYONE has to take the oath in English!!!!

I do, because if we want to become citizens in other countries, we should take their tests and learn their language too. It's only fair.

I think that we are a country of immigrants and the one thing that brings us together is our language. I agree with shoprchik saying that we have catered to the Spanish speaking populations by putting everything in both languages. MY POINT: the Declaration of Independence and all amendments are written in English..it should be our official language. I think people still have a right to speak their own language freely, but should also know English.

I agree with you about it being hard for Americans to get financial help, on the flip side I think its easier for illegals to get help. 1. I am a cashier at a major chain store...there are more Hispanics(possibly illegals) actually more than likely cause they don't speak English..using food stamps, wic and all other government services, than any other race/culture in that particular store. I assume it happens most places.

Also, the get free health care...especially hospital care...I'm sure they don't pay the bills as they are illegal and aren't going to give a real address or name.

Another thing that bothers me is that they are here illegally and don't have vaccinations to a lot of diseases that we do...we are currently seeing a resurgence of TB, leprosy and a lot of other diseases that we previously had under control to the vaccinations.....that's the one thing that I HATE when it comes to illegals...they are putting our health at risk and no one seems to care...especially politicians

My short answer, is yes, I agree they should learn English before becoming citizens. My next comment is that where I live I am the minority (white citizen). Next, I too have serious health problems and took years to be called disabled enough to get medical care. I didn't know they could be called disabled for not knowing English. Are you sure this is a law? Or is it someone in the welfare office discriminating.There is alot of anti white discrimination at welfare because they assume we are all rich and just trying to cheat the system. They tend to favor people they assume are being discriminated against not realizing everyone else is doing that too and those people end up getting spoilt. Just hang in there.

I agree with you 1000%. If we went to their countries, they won't learn English for us, we'll have to learn their language. Turn about is fair play - so they should learn English if they're going to live here!

We, USA, have catered to the Spanish speaking community WAY too much! You can't leave the house without EVERYTHING being in English AND Spanish! This is NOT right! If they want to come to the USA, then they should HAVE to learn the language! You can't make a phone call without the freakin' announcement of English or Spanish! There shouldn't be an option! ENGLISH ONLY!

What about the deaf? What about the blind? USA doesn't cater to them even half like we should. I have two small children and I've been teaching them Spanish, not that I want to, but if I want them to keep up with this ever growing nonsense then I have to teach it to them. I also want them to know what people around them are saying and not have it be said behind their backs. I've also been teaching them sign language because that is something worthwhile and useful!
