are you serious? 'i've been speaking this all my life and it was never hard for me' DUH. because it is your NATIVE LANGUAGE. english is actually not easy. if you knew anything about languages, which you obviously don't, you would know that there is actually an international rating system of languages and English is one of the hardest. but you just want to believe whatever you want in order to criticize folks, right?

not all illegals speak spanish, there are more than just mexicans who are here illegally, and second y don't you speak another language??? oh and third, spanish is not hard, try to learn arabic, or any other of the asian, middle estern languages, that's tough...

For me I grew up speaking both languages and am fluent in both.

It really shouldn't be that hard though. I mean English and Spanish use the same alphabet. It's not like going from Russian or Mandarin to English.

the reason English is so easy for you is because you have been around it your whole life, and probably practically it has been the only language you have heard around you.

It is the same with the Hispanics.
although, I think it is wrong that all the illegal immigrants come here illegally, and expect us to learn THEIR language, while not even bothering to learn ours.

The spanish is very wide, we have beautiful words and many ways of expressing.

Spanish must be hard to learn for someone with your very tiny brain, instead it's a shame american citizens: such great and successful people, quite smart (are you the exception?) pretend the whole world to speak english, no matter if they are in Norway, Namibia, Bangladesh, Trinidad y Tobago... or whatever country in the world, tell me something: AT LEAST... would you be able of understanding the english spoken in New Zealand, Australia, Ireland... or you just speak US english???

All people are not the same, some people have a harder time learning then others, and no english is hard to learn for foreign people. I know some people from germany that have a hard time speaking english and the people i know are very smart so it is the person some understand better then others! Jeff!

Honestly I ain't never seen illegals/legals or homegrown Spanish speakers that didn't try to speak English when in my presence . Mabbe they felt comfortable enough around me eh ? Kinda like a stutterer that don't stutter around family much .

if you have really been speaking it your entire life, have you ever thought of learning another language? or even worked at an orange orchard picking oranges? maybe if you opened the little box you're living in and get some light you might see what else is going on outside. btw, i'm currently doing a tour in the middle east, when was the last time you did something for your country, other than complain?

Honestly why learn English when you have everything you need in Little Mexico City. You have Uncle Pablo's store two blocks down, Auntie Maria's clothes store down the street, and Fredo's bar a mile away. What I am saying is immagrants isolate themselves with people of the same background. So if your highest immagrant nationality is Mexican, then there is no need to learn English.
But true they did come to a great country that speaks English. We shouldn't change for new people coming into the U.S. for better oppurtunities. Sorry to say this, but they should comform to us.

Well to answer your question, I think people who don't speak English is because they came to the U.S when they were adults so it's harder for them to learn another language regardless of their status. I know U.S citizens and residents who don't speak English, on the other hand there are illegal immigrants who do speak English sometimes their parents brought them to the U.S when they were children so they went to school here and they know English sometimes even better than Spanish.

Don't be fooled. Most of them can speak english when they have to. I've lived in San Diego all my life and have grown up with the illegals problem for decades. I was married to a mexican-american woman and her relatives could speak english just fine if they wanted to but when it wasn't it was Que??

you are right English is a lot easier than Spanish. I have been here for 5 years and i write,read and speak English lets say 95% I sometimes i even forget some words in Spanish
even though is my native language for example i dont know how to say the word standard in Spanish. you r right they should learn

Whilst English is undoubtedly a huge language in terms of its vocabulary and multiple meanings, it is by no means a difficult language to learn, particularly considering the impact of the language on Earth - unless you are from an isolated community such as the Arctic then it is difficult to escape written or spoken English. Spanish, in my opinion, is a more difficul language. However, regardless of this, the question was 'why do spanish immigrants in America' not learn how to speak English'? Well, I would have to say this is because they don't want to. Furthermore, those that answered the question with their own question 'Why don't Americans learn to speak Spanish', well maybe it is because they do not travel to Spansih speaking countries en masse to pick fruit etc. and consequently have no need to. So it is case of want and need. The Spanish need to speak English but don't want to, and the Americans don't need to learn Spanish and so don't bother. Being English as I am, I often wonder why we allow millions of non-english speaking people to infest our own country, when it is quite clear there is no way the English would be able to speak all of the 50 odd languages of the nations from whence they prevail, and as such they would not be able to progress in our society. Unfortunately in our case the foreign speaking people do not come here for temporary work, they come to live, usually at our expense (as they cannot speak English and therefore are not considered employable). To me, that is ridiculous. If I had any intention of moving to a foreign country to live, I would consider it normal behaviour to learn the native language with some sense of urgency.
