This is what is called the power of Collective Bargaining. Once the union is formed a contract is entered into on behalf of the non-management employees with the employer.
Anything affecting your jobs are negotiated as are the working conditions such as, your pay scale, raises, promotions, discipline, lay-offs terminations, leave, etc. In affect, you gain rights that you otherwise did not have. It is something in addition to what the law provides, which is always the minimum.
The union can file grievances on your behalf and negotiate settlements if you are unfairly treated. Sometimes, they will go all the way and file a law-suit. The higher the number of members, the more powerful the union. Democrats are usually pro-unions and Republicans are against unions. You pay union dues, usually about 1% of your wages if you join the union. |
