We are called Americans because we were the first country in the New World to be called America. We have America in our name. YOU refer to us as Americans. That's the name others gave to us and it stuck.

I don't know who you've been talking to, but at an international conference this summer this question came up, and none of the many Canadian, Brazilian, Chilean, etc, participants said they identify themselves as American. They know that American refers to people from the United States. They do not find it offensive.

The "official" name of Mexico is the United States of Mexico. Hence Mexican.

Since the official name of America is the United States of America, they are called Americans.

First off, Americans are not arrogant enough to take the entire American name for themselves. Over the years, it's been sort of given to us by others to differentiate between someone who lives in the U.S. and someone who doesn't. Inhabitants of the U.S. are Americans, and so are Canadians (to our north) and Mexicans and every other country south of them. But when you refer to someone from Guatemala, do you refer to them as Americans, or Guatemalans. Americans who live in the U.S. don't have an option. That's why we're left with "Americans"

The spanish word for Americans living in the U.S. is estadounidense , which translates to "United Statesian". If that's what you want us to call ourselves, please attempt a worldwide effort to change the nomenclature. I'm sure everyone will get on that wagon and adopt the proper nomenclature, so that people like you, who are upset over nothing, will be pleased. Until then, residents in the U.S. will be called "Americans".

Oh, did I mention that the U.S. is the only country in the Western Hemisphere that has "America" in its official name for its country (United States of America). And that was a long time ago, before we as the evil Americans that you know us to be, decided to strip you of the name. Evil and arrogant we are, aren't we?

Also, the part about undoccumented immigrants being confused by the wording, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You think that someone from another country in the Western Hemisphere (besides the island countries), don't know what they mean when they say "American"? Is that why when so many Americans who live in the U.S. get confused when they go to Mexican restaurants, and think that they're going to be served hamburgers and hot dogs, because the restaurant says that they're "Mexican" and hence also American in the process?

"United Statians"- I like that, it makes more sense. It is because of arrogance, but also because "United Statians" is rather awkward. The U.S.' full name is "United States of America", so technically people from the U.S. are "United States of American". "American" works as short for "United States of American". At any rate, I will keep using "American" to refer to people from the U.S., since that is the most commonly accepted definition. And by the way, Cubans aren't really Americans, because Cuba is not on the American continent, it is an island.

The Catholic Pope of Itally talked it over with the Portugese and the Spanish, and they decided to split the new world up. The Spanish took everything in one sector, and the Spanish took another sector. This land was called New Spain.

Vell... the Pope... nor the Spanish, did not have the right to name the land, nor to divide it up with each other. when the Original Colonists came to this country, they named it the Americas, and we became known as the Americans.

But how about the rest of New Spain? The Spanish got hot and started settling those lands. They hauled people out of prison and shackled them to the irons below to get them here. The Spanish King divided up the land with names, and the name of the country followed, generally, the name given it by the King and the Catholic Priests. And yes, the Mexicans are from the American Continent, but their country is named Mexico, and they accepted their name as Mexicans. Nooo... they didn't get confused... they just got greedy for American Jobs.

Since the Americans didn't feel so arrogant that they needed to tell the Mexicans, Brazilians, etc. what they should call themselves, I think most Americans feel no obligation to ask the rest of the world what we should call ourselves. If undocumented, illegal aliens feel some sense of confusion, some inner doubt, as to whether they are Americans or not, they can always present themselves to the nearest immigration office and ask for guidance. I feel certain any American official would make every effort to remove any possible doubt.

Citizens of the US are Americans. Illegal aliens are not citizens of any country they are in illegally, not only the US. If you are a citizen of the US, it doesn't matter what country you originally come from. You are American or an American citizen, you dope.

Because of the mentality of the people! Like you said their ignorance has no limit! They think that they own the world and everyone owes them the right to be born here, instead of thinking it a privilege to be born in a Country like this. They also forget, the fact of many of their them caming from across an ocean and were immigrants theirselves. So it puts everyone else in a better picture of how human a race that comes and lives in a different country has to adapt and take so much humliation from others that were in that same spot many centuries ago.
The only true Americans in my mind will be the American Indians. They were long before any other race, this was their home and like everything else they were stripped of everything they stood for!

You back to the school my United Statian friend, America in fact is a continent, North, South and Central America are subcontinents, is just a geographical separations. The continent was called America, in honor to the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci (Américo Vespucio), who served to the Corona de Castilla (like Cristoforo Colombo/Cristóbal Colón/Christopher Columbus), now known as España/Spain, the kingdom who discovered this continent and creators of the beautiful Spanish language, yes that language which is spoken mainly in Latin America. Américo Vespucio was Italian and the origin of Cristoforo Colombo it is unclear, but he is Spanish or Italian and therefore they were latins (Spanish, Italians, French, Romanian, Portuguese etc, etc)… like us, the Latin-Americans. Américo Vespucio is considered the first European to understand that the lands discovered by Christopher Columbus formed a new continent, which is why the cartographer Martin Waldseemuller in his 1507 map used the name América (in spanish) in his honor as a designation for the New World.

totally agree with PITULI... totally agree with EMAX...all yankees or gringos should go back to school...and learn 1st..HISTORY..then.. 2nd learn GEOGRAPHY...this beautiful continent was discovered long ago...and was called america...they didnt arrive to USA...they arrived to bahamas...cuba and dominican republic(actual names) in fact..we are more americans than all of you because we have a blood more pure and closer to the native...unlike all of you....that exterminated all native in USA..
