Why are Americans so sensitive about Hispanics speaking Spanish in the US ?

Isn't supposed that the US is a free country? What's the problem if people prefere Spanish than English? Remember that a big precentage of the US population has Hispanic origins, and most of the people have to agree with me that Spanish is much more beautiful than English. Additional Details Queen Bee: Your Mexican and half white?? that makes no sence at all concedaring that 20 million Mexicans are 100% Mexican and 100% of European Ancestry. You could say you're half Mexican and half American, that would make more sence.

Because of inferiority complex. How do you know they are talking about you? We are a free country and we will always be. I personally speak 3 languages so I never worry, if you are so mediocre that you do not want to learn any second language don't complain if there's smarter people out there that can and it doesn't matter in which country. |

Any nation that does not protect it's language will cease to exist as a united nation.
To see the final result of this, look at the linguistic chaos (and resultant disunity) of Canada.
Nobody (that I am aware of) is angry at people for speaking Spanish. People are angry (rightfully so) of individuals that REFUSE to learn English when LIVING IN an English-speaking nation. That is rude. |

What someone speaks in the privacy of their own home is no concern of mine.
But English is the language of the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. It is the language of the US. And if you want to live and work in the US, then you must learn to speak our language while conducting yourself in public.
It really is that simple. |

Mexicans are the only group that will not learn English but then expect us to cater to them by learning their language. It's been proven over and over again by requiring teachers to be bi-lingual, and other jobs as well. And to test this theory, many times, interviews are conducted in Spanish.
Now what kind of sense does that make when our language is English? |

Sometomes it's paranoia. They think the spanish speakers are talking about them. It's also rude to speak any foreign language in a public place where you may be overheard. I speak English and Spanish, when I go to Mexico I speak Spanish and when I'm here in the U.S. I only speak English. |

I'm not. I do think immigrants should make an effort to learn English. Not speaking English can be isolating and in some cases dangerous because they cannot make themselves understood in an emergency. |

I'm half Mexican and half White but I was born in Mexico, anyhow I speak both but I only speak spanish in Mexico, and always speak English here in the US, and I'm raising my kids the same way..because English is the language of America and that's where we live! I do not think we should have multi-langauge signs, or go out of our way to cater to non english speakers, but we should make sure that there are places where they can learn english! |

whatever dude, when you go to mex, you speak spanish, so when mexico comes to us (literally) the least they could do is speak english, same goes for any one of any race/creed/religion/ethnicity in any other country, some mexicans move to france you can be damned sure they will have to learn french, the frenchies would not tolerate nor would they be able to understand anything, why is it that america has to be the one that is a pushover and folds under the pressure, SPEAK ENGLISH OR GO HOME, the mexis would say the same to you if (but opposite) if you were trying to illegally or legally move to mexico.... think about it |

Because English is the one language that unifies the country.
We don't want to be forced to learn your language to make you feel better.
I came from another country, naturalized, and learned english. theres no excuse. |

English is the language here and efforts should be made to learn the native tongue wherever you make a permanent plan to move too. You shouldn't expect the country to make changes to adapt to you but make efforts to adapt to the country. For the same reason that you should respect customs and demonstrate behaviors appropriate and respectful to that country.
Go to a Muslim country and if you are a women it is respectful to cover your hair. We have a missionary that serves in Haiti and she wears dresses because that is the custom. |

I don't have a problem with it at all and you are right Spanish is the language of love. My grandparents came here from a different country and spoke a different language as well. We, the grandchildren were not allowed to speak anything but English. I still feel sad that we didn't talk to each other but that is how she wanted it....You in America...speak English....read....I love you....That was her and my grandfathers English. You see that is what she thought was great, people from everywhere speaking in a common language. Speak you Spanish at home or around friends but not to the rest of Americans, my grandson doesn't and he's Latino to. We all in this great country have to be at a moments notice able to communicate. Who knows maybe we will learn to speak Spanish with you. |

What any foreign individual has to do is to learn the language of this country if you are living and working here. For Hispanics, due to the difference in the sound and all the semantic construction of their own language its harder, but not impossible. If you are from another country and meet someone who speaks your same language, you'll want to talk in whatever language you speak. And in this country most people speaks loud, and if you hate Hispanics, you will find it annoying. I love spanish, but everybody has their own opinion and i respect that. This country is that great for its diversity and the ability of living respecting each others culture, we shouldn't let it lost for nonsense.
I think the pendejo its the one who said it and there should be a special section for that idiot, where he would be the only one. And you write quite well "pendejo" .Why dont you learn better spanish words. |

Because when we had to put up KEEP OUT signs in four languages (Mex,Hmong,Viet and English) to keep non english speaking people off are property. BUT stand in front of a judge and tell him in plain english we couldn't read the sign?
They sure don't understand six strand barbed wire (land border) or that isn't my land so stay off (common sense).
Even when we put the signs up they still cross/cut the wire just to get the sweet corn.
The funny part we havent had a person arrested that was a decendent of those illegals that came here in the 15-18 hundreds |

I think it has to do with our fear that someday our great great great grandchildren will no longer be English speakers because Spanish speakers didn't try to fit in now. We have no problem with people being bilingual, we just want you to know that you have moved to an English-speaking country. Just as if I move to Costa Rica permanently, or elsewhere, I better learn the language pretty darn quick and any children I might bring into the picture as well. It doesn't mean I cannot speak English with my kids at home to maintain their other culture - after all, being bilingual can be very advantageous for many reasons. |

Well, I think it has to do with the fact that there are SOOOO many illegal ones that demand we adhere to their gracing us with their criminality. You wanted to be in America--speak the language---ENGLISH. |

Because this is America and our country was founded on English. Speak it or get out!!!! |

It's so funny how the person who started this topic mentioned nothing about mexicans specifically, he used the term hispanics. But everyone keeps saying mexican this and mexican that and "mexicans like you..." lmao. Like mexicans are the only ones that come to the US. hahaha but yeah
I'm SICK of pressing 1 for English too! |

Spanish is unintelligent sounding yeah that's why it's one of the three romance languages French and Italian are the other two all of which descended from ancient Rome. Americans for the most part are pretty stupid when it comes to other languages I speak English and Spanish I wish I spoke more languages look at Europe they speak an average of two to three languages |
