Why are Hungary and Romania being allowed to join the EU in 2007, when they won't let Turkey join?

The ignorance about EU amongst people sometimes amazes me. Hungary is a member already since 1st May 2004. It is Bulgaria that together with Romania joins EU next year. And nobody picked that up.

There is a certain bias towards Turkey in the other powerful members of EU. They think that Turkey will be the single Muslim country in predominantly Christian EU. I wonder what happened to the idea of Secularism? They've also imposed certain conditions like teaching English language in schools and reducing corruption in governmental agencies.

But most important of all, its the Cyprus issue. Turkey occupied Northern Cyprus in 1974, when the Greek Cypriots tried to join Cyprus with Greece unilaterally, against the wishes of Turk Cypriots.

Recently there was a referendum held in Cyprus. The conditions of the referendum were really strange. It was stated that if Turkish and Greek Cyprus unified together, they'll be admitted as members of EU. But if either one of them rejected the proposal, Greek Cyprus will get the status anyways, but Turkish Cyprus will be rejected the privilege. So Turkish Cyprus welcomed the proposal overwhelmingly but Greek Cyprus rejected the proposal. They entered the EU last year. While Turkish Cyprus and Turkey are still outside it.

Because Turkey rejected the EU constitution. They aren't willing to accept some of the provisions. The constitution will be amended and they will eventually join. Besides there acceptance or denial won't be announced probably until December.

Turkey considers itself a European nation, they use many Western ideals in their government and business. You people need to take the blinders off, I think I've said that about a hundred times today. Quit watching FOX, studies have shown there are long term effects to brainwashing. Stop the madness now before it is too late for you. You must learn to be a free thinker, there may still be time to save your braincells before they are completely fried.

I really don't know. We do not need any more in the EU. We have high unemployment, social problems and massive debts in the EU. So the brains bring in two countries who all that and more. Get out is the best way forward for the UK. We will end up paying for them.

Turkey is has a secular Government and is part of NATO but some of the laws in Turkey are not in line with western practise. Notable laws relating to Free Speech, Human rights(the use of torture ,although the USA and Britain is coming into line with Turkey rather than civilised western practise). The Turkish Government is at odds with the Armenian massacres being portrayed as genocide, and prefers to call it migration rather than ethnic cleansing. It is these fine points of detail that are being worked on.

Turkey may be deemed to belong more to Moslem Arab neighbouring states , due to its Islam majority population.

Maybe if it had OIL wealth in its shores/borders matters be different.

Its just asking for trouble. And an EU constitution is ridiculous. Countries have constitiutions not continents. Europe is full of many varied cultures and believes and try to merge them in to U.S.E is only going to end in tears. And how wonderful its going to be when romania and bulgaria join (sarcasm). Watch the crime figures go through the roof when the romanians get over here. And as for turkey! How far are they taking this eu. what about turkeys neighbours to the east, are they in next?

Turkey has a problem - it is governed by a Muslim orientated political elite. Turks want to return to the Atta Turk type of government - non-religious. The EU [rightly in my opinion] do not trust the present Turkish Gov - it is more interested in Islam than day to day politics. Keep Turkey out.

I have no idea never been to any of those countries. All I know is what I've read in passing - that Turkey is to the EU what Mexico is to the US, you can take it from there.

There are at least two answers to this question.
First, the human rights issue. Some members of the EU are not satisfied with Turkey's record on human rights.
Second, Greece and Turkey have been hostile to eachother for years, and it could be that Greece is using its influence to prevent Turkey from entering the EU.
Two other reasons have been suggested as well: some Europeans feel that Turkey is not really a part of the European continent, and
Many Europeans feel that Turkey, as a Moslem country, is not a part of the European culture.
Whether we agree with any of those reasons or not, those are the issues that Turkey is battling with. Progress has been made to acceptance in the past few years, and I don't think it will be long before Turkey enters the EU.

im not sure and personally dont care america needs to stay out of no win situations there very good leaving bags of garbage to the amercan people dont give me the bullpit the constituion allows us to get ivolved in no win situations .AND we should protect people who enjoye dying next thing you no inocent americans are being killed because you got involved in garbage and nowytou cant get out of it until the innacent are dying and still cant get out. mind your business choosen ones and let the innacent bee.
