Mexicans could learn english in two weeks. |

Why can't English be the official language of America.
Hispanics could learn English in two weeks.
It works both ways... |

Because English is the language of America. I think the real question is why can't people who want to live in this country learn to assimilate and speak English? Ever heard the saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"? |

I am Mexican-American.Spanish did not come from Mexico.Besides that I hate the spanish blood Mexicans who control the wealth, because they do not take care of their poverty.I speak spanish but sorry I do not agree with you. |

Ok....Im hispanic I see your point in the sense of that its hard for spanish speakers to learn English......but really why force a country to change its ways just because they have a growing population of Spanish speakers....Hispanics, latinos all come here expected to hear another language....they country already allowed them in....now we have to change a major concept of being American....If someone moves to mexico...shouldnt they be expected and obviously learn to get use to Spanish... |

Ha, Ha. I think I'd be laughing more heartily if we weren't already headed that way. I think it's ridiculous that we have formatted American television shows, products, stores, etc. etc. to include the Spanish language. Whenever Americans go abroad, one of the first things you imagine is the trusty "phrasebook." You know, where is the hotel, where is the bathroom.... and if it's a semester abroad, several semesters in that countrys' language are required before you can even consider it. So in my opinion, if anyone wants to travel or LEAGALLY immigrate here, they can learn the blasted language. |

Enough is enough, we do need to learn other languages, but English is our language no matter how hard you want it to be for you and your illegal friends and family, and it will never happen. |

Because this country was founded with the English language and that has been what was primarily spoken for some 200+ years now. To change the official language would cause massive nationwide riots and cost trillions of dollars to change everything to Spanish. Don't like English? Deal with it or move out. Not to be racist or anything, but thats just the way it is. |

Why do so many Spanish people immigrants fail to want to learn to speak English. Since most Americans speak English why would we consider any other language as our national language? |

I took two years of Spanish and college and never made more than a D. If it's the easiest language to learn, I'm in big trouble. I hated those classes. |

Would any other country be expected to change it's national language because of being overrun by illegal immigrants? Hardly!
Why is this even a question? Spanish is the language in MEXICO, French is the language in FRANCE, Italian is the language in ITALY, Chinese is the language in CHINA, English is the language in AMERICA! GET OVER IT! |

In my opinion, when this country was formed many years ago it was done with the immigrants from England. So ever since the newcomers who came to this country brought their languages with them. They spoke it in their homes but when they went out to work they all wanted to speak English it was the "language of the land".
It would be the same thing if we went to France....would we want them to change their language to ours...whatever we speak? I don't think so.....When you move to another country you put down your old ways and pick up the new ways of your new home.
You can still keep your mother tongue with your family and friends but when you do business in America...you should respect the language of the majority of the people. It's seems most fair to me and most Americans.
Our country is like a soup...with many ingredients..but we have "one language" to use and it does not hurt to have something we call our American way of speaking and communicating. One last comment my grandparents came from Italy and they insisted their many children speak English...even though they spoke Italian at home. I'm proud of my heritage but respect the fathers who were our first leaders and also the leaders we have today. Don't break something if it isn't broken....like our first language English. Proud to be an American! |

When the majority of people in the country are hispanic, let it be put to a vote. BTW To speak spanish well and to understand vanicular spoken spanish is not that simple, especially for older folks that don't speak it now |

I swear I have seen exactly this question before. Since the answer is obvious the reason for asking it is obvious too. If you just want to piss people off or stir up bad feelings why not try a new subject. This one isn't worth debating. |

I love this tricky and controversial questions!!..... technically it could since most of the countries in "AMERICA" speak Spanish (to all the ignorants who think that America is just the United States of America well...go back to school and learn some geography, America is all the Continent!) but if you are referring to the USA...well ....this country language is English and it has been that for a very long time...if you come to this country wouldn't be that bad to try to learn the language, and get yourself educated...(and that goes to all the ignorant non immigrants also) |

I think it's maybey because english has dominated for several years, and then when the people who spoke english moved away to get away from the scary frenchies they took english with them and it became the official language. i dunno. Better than having german as the first. besides... spanish people could learn eniglish in two weeks |
