Why can't foreign people learn English?

They just don't think they should have to. They (especially the Mexicans) believe WE should learn THEIR language, you know, since we "stole this land from them to begin with" and since they're "taking back what's theirs." etc, etc, etc. (Yeah, a bunch of crap.) But I, for one, will never learn their dirty language. I refuse to cater to those people in ANY way.

I would not expect non-english speaking people to have a full comprehension of the english language if they were visiting, or even on a short visa. When I have visited non-english speaking countries in the past, I have only bothered to learn the absolute basics, as I have no intention of calling that country 'home' at that point in time.
On the other hand, I would expect people to be at least moderately fluent in english if they were to want to live in Australia. Quite a number don't bother.
I believe this is because they are happy and comfortable in the current lifestyle / religion / society values etc.. that they currently have. What they (usually) DON'T have is a standard of living like this country does. Therefore they think, 'I have no intention of learning about another culture or learn another language, but I don't like the repression in my birth country, Australia sounds like the ticket!'

I love anyone who loves this country. These people don't. They love the convenience.

Look around and see that all around you are foreigners, and they all speak English, except for minorities. Here your Kind don,t even know your own language spoken properly, the foreigners are more educated and they speak more than two languages, what do you speak, only English and you think you are great. Wake up little own and climb off your pedestal.

Based on what you said why cant we learn Cherokee, Spanish, Choctaw, Seminole, Creek, Navajo, Sioux, Apache, etc. They were the first.

I don't pity you, I think as much as these people hate us and disrespect our country, we should feel some resentment. Only Americans who do not care about our freedoms and how we got them pity us when we get very angry. As you see it is ok to take our money and get a free education and talk straight to our face about what is wrong with America, before you know it the weak begin to believe these people. Maybe if our government stopped bending over backwards to kiss there *** they just might be Forced to learn. There not gonna learn unless they have to. Get the government and stores to STOP printing everything in two languages. Stop this BS of calling resturaunts racists if they force you to order in English. i agree with rle. many people show astonishment to an 18-year-old italian girl who can speak 4languages (most of them in english-speaking countries).
and don't forget that english has the easiest grammar. You would probably take the double of time to rach the same level of speaking writing and understanding in my langage in comparison to my level in english

we are all foreighners and don't have a clue about the native tongue we shouldspeak out of respect for our true forefathers. stop watching the mainstream media and their propaganda lies. nbc , cbs , abc , fox , cnn...etc and that goes for the local news as well. understand that anytime that a corporate interest is involved such as disney ...etc , then you can bet your last dollar that the information the is publically presented from that company will directly reflect the interest of the major stockholders viewpoints.and if you live in that pink cloud that tells you that when they say, " the viewpoints and concerns discussed here are not necessarily the belief of this station...etc then "WAKE UP ! "don't listen to any of them no matter what the topic may be because you are being and have been trained to believe everything they tell you even if your better judgement questions their facts.try it for a month ( longer if you can ) and use your intellect to make your mind up about the world. look at the history of the topics we see today. you will begin to recognize patterns that have repeattedly failed and you had been reduced to pavlovs dog for most of your life.if it didn't work six times in a row and now you are being told to agree to another attempt. in less than 30 minutes you'll find that someone will become richer (again) by the publics approval. haven't you ever wondered why it is that one year , nbc news , tells us that coffee will kill you and the next year , abc news , say's that a new study reveals you'll live longer if you drink coffee ? you are the puppet of corporate interests and as long as you listen to the daily brainwashing through the media , a puppet you'll stay and thus ask why can't they speak english. be patient and teach instead of complaining. george bush is killing the world and the illuminatti of the corporate world will watch it die as long as it means a profit. we need each others support and god bless.

How many languages do you speak?
Many people from other countries already speak two or more languages. As you get older it is harder to learn to speak another language.
If you are a grown-up and working 8-10 hours a day, plus transit time and then have to do chores at home to take care of the family, you don't have time or energy to learn a new langugage.
I know a lot of Americans who jokingly say they can't learn another language, they're just terrible at it. If we can accept that from our own countrymen, why can't we accept it from others.

Why don't they learn english when they come to the states? Maybe because they can't afford a teacher.
By the way, how many other languages do you speak? How about chinese? It's the most spoken language in the world. Or spanish, the most spoken language on the American continent.

well i dont know where ur from, but I know many Australian and American people who make many gramatical mistakes and the funny thing is they dont even know it. Frankly speaking with no offence to anyone, Americans dont always speak proper english.

Same reason we can't learn their language overnight. If its not taught in their country and they don't use it daily they won't know what it means. Some actually do learn English to move to the states. They just not as good at understanding it totally mostly the "slang" words because they haven't learned it all their lives.

There are so many little foreign communities, universal communication is no longer required. There's Chinatown, Korea Town, Little Tokyo, Little Italy, Little Armenia, Little Moscow, Little Manilla, Little Havana, Little Hanoi, Little Saigon, Little Ethiopia and Mexico City2 aka Los Angeles, etc... These "Little" communities grow larger every year. As these communities grow, their ability to provide the essentials and extras, increases. Residence of these communities can make due, rarely needing to travel outside the community. Having no desire to learn English only increases a person's dependence on the community. Like wise, this further discourages English speakers from supporting/entering certain communities. Thus, fueling the rant that English speaking Americans are racist. Why? Because we don't want to learn 58 different languages. In my opinion, growing communication barriers have lead many foreign immigrants to perceive American attitude as "we think we are better than everyone else". It's just the opposite, Americans allow millions of immigrants to enter every year. Originally, immigrants came for the chance at a better life, greater opportunity, some even the desire to contribute, often something unique. Back then, if they refused to communicate upon and after arrival, nothing would've been achieved. Getting to America wasn't the final goal, it was just the beginning. Most Americans would agree, life in the US would be greater for all, if everyone was able to communicate. Most Immigrants today seem content just getting into the US. Desire for a better job/wage has replaced the greater opportunity. Filling a less desirable, low-skilled position, is now considered a unique contribution. The desire for a better life has been replaced with contentment of working any job that pays more than your old job.
Everyone in the US, needs the ability to communicate using one same language. Driving a vehicle for example, stop signs, turn signals, red-yellow-green lights, a form of communication that all drivers willingly accept, understand and agree to. We all drive on the right side of the road to make driving safer/more efficient, not because we're racist to foreigners originally from places where they drove on the left. Imagine if traffic laws varied throughout the US? In this community people drive on the left and a red light means go, the next town over people drive on the right and red means stop. There would be so many accidents, it wouldn't be worth getting into a car. People would travel less and less. We'd spend most of our life in the same little village, experiencing only a fraction of what the US has to offer.

Anyway, If we simply enforced our laws, there wouldn't be a need for electric fences. But no, we'd rather construct a giant billion$$ obstacle, when kicking illegals out would be far more effective and efficient.

You're really narrowing down the human race aren't you? A lot of tourists learn how to communicate in the countries that they visit. Have you actually travelled to a country that doesn't speak English? Or are you just speaking hyperthetically when it comes to you?
