It would be a great deal for Mexico, but I don't see what the benefit is to the United States. |

Mexico cannot sustain itself, why should we assimilate them, with their debts and disrespect for our laws. |

I am Canadian and am VERY OPPOSED to the idea of a North American Union! Why would I want to consolidate the Canadian dollar with the US dollar. The US does not even have gold to back their money. It's essentailly monopoly money. That's just one reason, I have many others.
There is much more to this Union than what they are letting on. Unfortunatly for the US govenment, the previous Mexican president can't keep his mouth shut so people are becoming more aware of what the North American Union is about. |

It would not work.
America does not want to become another 3rd world country.
We are proud of who and what we are.
And why let only mexico vote? It is not up to them. Most of America would say heck no!
A good chunk of MExico would probebly say No too, Alot of the good Mexicans in Mexico are proud of who they are too, I am sure they wouldn't want to give up their way of life either.
This is mainly about the illegals and mos of them don't want to be American anyway, they want to take us over and wipe us out.
So double heck no! |

por que yo no hablamos engles pinche gringo!
By the way, america LOVES LOVES LOVES the situation with mexico. NAFTA was set up to rape mexico. Illegals do cheap labor in order to earn companies more profit or for jobs americans dont want to do and they cant ever earn social security.
Take some economics classes, and learn what NAFTA really did, also learn about how illegals fuel our economy, and youll see why things are the way they are...our government loves illegals, they love the corruption of mexico, they love taking advantage of a weak, 3rd world country just south of them....Canada on the other hand scares them, why do you think theres this whole "your anti american, move to canada" thing going on? it runs deeper than just a saying my friend. |

Maybe better for Mexico. What possible benefits would come to America to give her a 3rd world nation to deal with? NO THANKS. |

unfortunately it would never work with Mexico being so corrupt. It would be a good idea but the Mexican government would never give up the power they have. It would be beneficial if we could all work together but I don't see that happening either. |

It is not up to us to rescue the Mexicans. Canada has a better economy than mexico and it is much less crowded. Visit Mexico some time and you will understand why very few people are gung-ho to get rid of the border. I'm not putting down Mexicans, but their country has very deep financial problems. The government is corrupt. The 3rd richest man in the world lives in Mexico, yet many of the people there don't have enough to eat. Mexico needs to get its own house in order. We can't do it for them. |

If Canada doesn't have a problem with it then they should get the immigrants to go over there.
"If the majority of Mexico says yes then close the border?" That makes no sense. There have to be SOME boundaries. |

I'll tell you what. I'll consider it the day that Mexico meets our standard of living without needing money sent from America as their #4 source of revenue. |

Mexico is just one step above being a thrid world nation. Allowing them to join the United Sates would be an econmic drain on us that I fear we would never recover from. There are level of coruption with in the Mexican government that we here in America could never even dream of. Don't tkae this as a poke on the Mexican people. They are wonderful family loving, hard working people, but the condition of their country is the result of centuries of corruption. |

Canada is up there not bothering anybody hehe. So we don't pay attention to them much.
Mexico there is the whole immigration issue.
If you ever met a latino their very proud of Mexico. And they don't wanna subside to laws of America.
The culture is very different. I've been to Mexico..i hated it personally. While when a mexican comes to america they hate it too....
it wouldnt work out |

Because US citizens don't want to climb the fence to allow themselves the "rights" of Mexicans. Ummmmmmmmmmm, I'm trying to think what those rights might be........ |

You have to have borders in this modern world.
This protects the United States as well as Mexico. |

There are a variety of reasons why and against joining mexico and USA.
Most of Canada is has a culture, tradition and history more
paralelling the USA than Mexico.
The Standard of living in Canada is closer to the USA than Mexico.
While the USA government has a high level of corruption and some "lawlessness" the Mexican government has a much higher level of corruption and lawlessness.
IF persons and corporations of wealth and power in the USA wanted a combined USA and Mexico, it would have already happend.
Lastly, when I was younger I had this romanticized view of the USA and our government and often hoped that the the borders of the USA would broaden and bring democracy, prosperity and peace and joy to the rest of the world.
Since I have come to know that the US government has its own issues, I do not believe that the USA borders should broaden. Rather, I believe there needs to be a variety of governments and economies so persons of varying abilities and veiws have a greater chance of moving to a country that better suits their beliefs and lifestyle and or to get a fresh start. Further, to many people are victims of government oppression to cover corruption in both the USA and Mexico.
These people need the opportunity to escape the oppression and tyranny they have been subject to in there own countries so they can move somewhere else.
Well, thats my rant for today. |

Your problem is that the vast majority of Americans want illegals out of our country. Not only would we never vote to open our borders, we also are going to vote OUT any politicians who are for any kind of amnesty. We did it with the last amnesty bill and that Dream Act thing and now people are going to start losing their cushy political jobs if they don't start voting to deport illegals. |

Why can't Mexico fix their own problems? It is the 13th richest country in the world. Facts are facts.
Or are you saying that Mexicans cannot govern themselves and need our help and oversight? I don't think so.
Think about it. |

I've thought about this and discussed a merger with others. There are many benefits. The biggest is that Mexico would provide a new frontier for our young people. Fortunes would be made. We'd get their excess labor while the US would supply the technological know-how. After you explain the concept to Americans, most of them like it. Unfortunately, Mexicans I talked to don't want or trust the US government. They see their way of life and environment being destroyed by our greed. |

OMG>. are u serious.... thats totally out of the question.. i live in the SW of USA.. and we have so many people from Mexico taking over Albq... the South Valley is full of them.. we dont need to add on more... Mexico would just bring our living cost up, welfare, health care, food stamps...etc... and We in USA will have to pay for it..So we dont need to join them.... |

It's bad enough that we have lost a lot of big jobs due to these companies moving to mexico to save $$ and make a bigger profit by making prods. over there just like china. they may take the less prestigious jobs over americans but a lot of folks lose their jobs due to corps going to other countries for less labor costs. Mexican's get good jobs by this and americans that have worked places for 15+ yrs. lose everything and have to start over making a lot less trying to make ends meet. They still come over here for work. There's got to be borders if we could move freely among mexico as you suggest we wouldn't need passports for any country we go to just come and go as we please. Do you want that kind of freedom for everyone I wouldn't security is crappy as it is it would make it worse. |

It might be simular to what happened when the two Germanies joined back together after the fall of the Berlin Wall. One vibrant economy joining with a depressed one. The toll was emense. But it did work.
Perhaps it could work if not for Nationalism and racism on both sides. Mexico would need to petition to the US to be accepted as a State. This is unlikely to ever happen because of National pride, language difference and cultural heritage concerns. |

i dont think its a good idea, Mexico should stay mexico and the u.s should stauy the U.S ...the only solution in the illegal immigration problem starts with both governments joining together to fight the problem. first mexico needs to do something about their economy to make more jobs and enrich there lands. U.S needs to just beef up its border more and apply strict laws on people who hire illegals ..it will take time but this could work |

Because our economy in many areas has reached the breaking point with "only" 15 million illegal immigrants in this country. If we opened the border, we would have at least triple that number because Mexico does not want these types of uneducated, poor, dark-skinned people in their country. .Mexico also has an extremely corrupt culture. Absorbing over 30 million more of these people from that type of culture into our culture would be very difficult and costly for at least 2 generations.
The culture of Canada is very similar to ours which means Canadians share the same values as most Americans. Plus Canadians already speak English - even most in Quebec do. Most Mexicans do not. So there is an instant language barrier to deal with when dealing with Mexicans.
