What! No! This country was founded on immigrants, and if they are here legally then you should say nothing of the sort! Try looking at a history book some time, you maybe your own family tree and see how many of your ancestors couldn't speak English when they came to this country. |

Their not being to speak English hurts them a lot more than it hurts anyone else.
I'm sure that they realise this. Maybe they have tried, maybe not. Either way it's best to not go on the offensive about something like this. |

Well you should learn Chinese, to see how smart are you.Or probably you are just jealous of them because they have money, you don't thinks so? |

Leave them alone. What the hell do you care what language they speak? If they can run their businesses and get on with their lives happily, who cares? And even if they cant do that, its still none of your damn business. |

Americans do not speak the correct English anyway, you speak American and most of you do that poorly so before you go and criticize someone else's language perhaps you should look at yourself first |

maybe you should learn Italian. expand your mind. |

They should learn english. I think it`s arrogant to move to a country and not learn it`s language.
Some countries would`nt even give a citizenship without a language test. |

You should suggest they learn English. |

Rome wasn't build in a day as for the language they will learn is a matter of time, i'm studying economics and statistics in Florence(Italy) i knew not even a single word in Italian language when i came but now i can speak fluently i don't think you should take decision for them the authorities are there if there is the need. |

Maybe they don't want to do it. maybe it's so hard for them. I advice that you learn to speak italian and ask yourself to them. |
|

they will learn by time, nobody is native american anyway |

No, because this is a free country. My grandpa never did learn to read & write, yet had a good business going. Grandma did the paperwork for him. Being Native Americans, should they have just gone off to live in the tribe? No! |

If they are contributing in a positive way to our country, I don't see what the problem is. |

I don't think is appropriate for you to suggest anything.
They will learn the language when they can no longer deal with the communication problems the LANGUAGE BARRIER imposes. |

Oh, that will make you popular at Thanksgiving Dinner!
I think they should have the courtesy to try to learn the language of the country they chose as an emigration destination. However, if they are here legally and have no interest in becoming a citizen, they don't have to. It is probably difficult at family occasions, though. |

we may not like it but as long as they are legal , and honest working and can provide for themselves , there is no law that that they have to do it , and you see in way the represents what the constitution is all about |

I don't think I would suggest that they leave the country if they don't learn (you do still have to associate with these people, after all, so you should probably be as civil as possible when speaking to them). But, yes, I think you should suggest that they learn English -- I'm sure they know this already, but maybe with the current immigration debate bringing so much attention to the issue and then your mentioning something about it, they'll realize that they would be more accepted in this country if they made more of an effort to conform to our customs and norms. It would be nice to be able to just tell them how you feel, and that if they want to take advantage of the opportunities offered in this country then they SHOULD learn to speak English...but they would probably be more receptive to the idea if they see some advantage in it for them -- "things would be easier and more pleasant for you here if you learned to speak English, that's why I think you should make the effort". And I think you should do the investigation for them, find out where they can take lessons and offer to help if they need it (like if they need a ride there or something). Good luck - |

If they live here in the U.S.A... they need to learn English!!!!!!! |

Why not suggest it? Even better idea is why not try to HELP them learn English. It is a very difficult language to learn, supposed to be one of the hardest languages. Espically when they are basically learning Proper English as oppose to American English. |
|

nah,I wouldn't do that.As long as they aren't demannding everything in Italian, leave them alone. |

Just because they don't speak English doesn't mean they should leave. Do you know how hard it is to learn another language?? Maybe you should tell them that learning English would better help them and their buisniesses. But asking them to leave because they don't speak our language is kinda Nazi-like. |

take a look at that and tell me how many of them you can read. Just because you have had the advantage of learning the most difficult language (linguistically) from birth does not mean you have the right to tell others (who probably already speak multiple languages) that they should learn and/or speak english. I do admit that to live and work in the USA it is preffered that you speak english at least moderately well to get and hold a better paying job. however, it's not as though english is the end-all, be-all of languages. Their speaking of the language (by the way: the USA DOES NOT HAVE AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE. So don't fall back on that's what you should speak if you live here.) is preffered by you but not even necessary. I have friends all over the USA that although they live in smaller niche communities don't speak more than a few words of english. So if you do feel the need to drop the rude and brutal: "Ya'll best learn the language or get the hell out!" line at least realize that there is no official language here and it's just as reasonable for them to speak Italian in a global world as english. |

I just don't understand the minds of you anglo-british stupids. What's the problem if they don't speak English?instead of writing this question, you should have been trying your hands on italian. You should have been grateful. Atleast we indians are very enthusiastic to learn new languages. Nearly all Indians are either bilinguals oq multilinguals. And I thought America and britain are democratic. |
