Why can't we build a wall?

A couple of reasons. For one, the Great Wall of China took about 1,400 years to complete - ours would probably take about 50 years and cost a couple billion dollars. Secondly, immigration isn't really a problem. We've had the same amount of illegal immigrants for the last 120 years and this is only now being used as a hot-button topic to distract the dumbest of our population so that they donâ€™t demand that their politicians deal with real issues like war, debt, healthcare, environment and social security. And lastly, because the world already has enough reasons to laugh at us â€“ we really donâ€™t need to give them anymore.

More importantly, 80% of all illegal immigrants come to this country legally. They come on planes to visit and just never return. It would be very easy to fix - but no politician will ever decide to take this on because they know that they need to be here for our economy and country growth.

The government needs illegal immigrants to come in just like they need drug dealers on the streets. it's money income to their police and what not. Also illegal immigrants are willing to take on jobs that most ppl might not. It's a government politics thing.

Also i don't think an implemented wall would do a country any good for tourism. The berlin wall and wall of china are history so it's interesting to see and they aren't implemented making it feel more or less safe to see.

I think "Mike", and "Tcasey" have this one right. We need to start getting more serious about this. All this talking we are all doing is great and all, we've all found out that we agree that we need a wall.....so, now who is going to go out there and start it, and WHEN? If I got a call right now to go and build a wall without pay, just to keep them out, I'd so be there! Thing is, no one seems to be interested in doing any thing further, than to gripe about how much we have to put an end to all of this. I'm really starting to get upset about the whole thing. I think on May 1st while they are all rallying together in one huge mass, they need to be collected and deported on the spot with out hesitation. Anyone who resists should be shot.

Sure. All the illegal immigrants are going to look at that wall and say "Oh, gee, I guess I better turn around and go home!"

The legalization process needs to be easier. That's the only solution. If you live in El Salvador, for example, the legalization fees and the attorneys' fees add up to two or three TIMES your entire annual income and most people just can't pay for that. Throw in the fact that it takes like 9 years to go through the process... well, it's easy to see why so many take the illegal way. I'm not condoning it--- just explaining why it happens. So making the process faster and more affordable would make more immigrants be legal, and we'd be able to keep track of them, and tax them.

Also, the drug runners, thugs and terrorists are going to come here illegally no matter what the law is, so any wall you put up won't make you safer.

Just build a huge Wal Mart along the border. The Mexicans can come in to work from their side, go back home at night and we can go in from the front, buy our stuff and go home too.

Yes, they can the build a wall at sing sing prison is the best. They don't need to build a continues one just about 20 miles outward from the cities.
Chinese wall of china was actually built twice.
The Berlin wall was to keep people in, not out.
I agree it sure would be a tourist attraction just like the two above.

I don't think a wall is the answer. That cost money to do, and i dont know if you have noticed the 9 billion dollar deficit. The US can't afford to spend more money on this. I would rather have illigal immigrants from Mexico come over than our troops not have enough supplies. Put your hate aside and think for a little please. And if the US does agree to build a wall then build one blocking Canada off.. after all, thats the way he terrorists came in. And since the Canadians are white and speak better english than the Mexians they can get better jobs meaning it will be easier for the illigal Canadian to take better jobs, instead of cotton picking.

A wall would be too expensive. It would be easier to spend money on enforcement of laws against employing illegals. If we bankrupt companies and put their owners in jail, there will be no employment for illegals.

You'll see 10 million illegal aliens pay for their own trip back to their own country.

It won't stop illegal immigration but it will slow it down.

No it's not like Nazi Germany. The wall there was built to keep people in. A wall here would be built to keep people out. Big difference. Please learn a little about history before making comparisons.

Or maybe we can build a little zapper - like the ones you use on moths. You put them outside and the moths go past the beam and get zapped.

We should get the exterminator to install one of those on the border.

Zap the illegals, y'know? Not to kill them, but to knock them unconscious until found by the border patrol.

The great wall wasn't for tourism. It just turned out that way. It was to keep the huns out. We should build a wall or something to block our northern and southern part so no illegal immirgants will be here. We shouldn't build a wall becuase it'll take so much room. ALso, a lot of people will be walking it and easier to bomb.

why build a wall, just come down hard on businesses who hire illegals. then they'll stop hiring them, illegals wont have jobs, which means they wont have a reason to come here

Thats a great idea! But lets take it a step further and put electic wiring around it too! PLEASE...if our government really wanted to stop it they probably could, the porblem is they don't want to. Do some research. When our ecomony is slow the security along the border gets lax so we can get cheap labor. When the economy gets stableized, we pretend to be outraged by the droves of Mexicans coming in.

yes, build a wall. good idea! use all the money from our national budget(since there's so much of it) to build it and while you're at it let's raise taxes so that we can afford to man the wall with border patrol officials. also why don't we just shoot them all on sight! or here's a better idea. let's remained focused that we've lost hundreds of soldiers over seas to an unjustified war or that we're in a trillions and trillions of dollars deficit. i think there are more important issues currently affecting this country than pablo the poolboy, don't you?
