Why can we say aussies, yanks, and brits but cant say paki???

Strangely enough the Stan part of Pakistan just means country or land. Afghans live in Afghanistan etc. so you would think somebody who came from Pakistan was a Paki but this has become derogatory and therefore is regarded as a racist slur.

if you were of Pakistani origins, then you could say paki. Otherwise its an insult. In America, the big double standard is the use of the word ni**er. Some blacks use it in reference to each other, but whites are racist if they say it.

I'd say it's more down to the intent. Most morons will use the term whether a person is of pakistani persuasion or not.

I believe in calling a spade a spade.
A Yank, a Brit etc. If the Paki's have a problem they could always change the name of their country to Wankouvier or something they do like.

I've never thought of that, it just sounds derogatory to me. So, to an extent it is exactly the same as the rest, but since we are all conditioned by the way that it has been used in the past, we should refrain from using it.

i have no idea what that mean . but this is a free country so i like to see the peoples say what ever in the hell they want to races or not .to many dam restiction . i for one like to know who they are rather than not know .maybe yahoo answer will get it soon . gather.com

I don't know. I rarely if ever use terms like that. I don't mind if someone call me a Canuck. I guess it 's part of being politically correct. If you know the moniker is not offending to the person, use it. However the proper use of nationalities shows more respect.

It is the language associated with the word Pakis, most of the times those who use this word are insulting this race. Just try to remember how many times you heard this word not in a context of insult or racial hate!

Well I dont see why not. Pakisan means the country of the good people....stan is country so presumbly the paki means good people so you can say it....Better to be Hindustani though lol....the country of the Hndus...they are not oppressive or aggressive.

The Americans call themselves Yanks, the Australian call themselves Aussies and the British call themselves Brits. The word 'Paki' is derogatory, and Pakistans do not use it. If they are not comfortable using this 'termininology', we should also refrain.

Actually when I came here (florida) from Australia I made the mistake of calling someone a yank. Southerners dont appreciate that...they are southern not yankees. Yet in Australia all Americans are called yanks. Which digresses from your question but you know the answer to that anyway so why ask it?

It's the tone and the way you put it into a sentence. Pakistanis do not think it is a bad term but because it is always used fowl it has become a bad word.

I have a nephew who lived in the SE of England and I used to ask him what he would do at the weekends. And he replied Auntie Annette I am going Paki Bashing. That is what he knew and that is what he grew up with. Because on the otherside of the coin the Parkistanis would call my nephew white scum.
