Why didn't the White Invaders learn to speak Cherokee when they came here??

Why didn't the White Invaders learn to speak Cherokee when they came here??
|
You see, this is just as stupid a question as the one about wanting people to speak english.
America should be grateful that Spanish is so prevalent, because bilingualism enhances people's overall learning abilities.

maybe if english was more prevalent in other countries....we could understand them more once they came here... |

i don't think cherokee was the only language. and they probably should have. but you know, we're supposed to learn from mistakes in history. |

One difference. We don't owe it to them to help them use Spanish with our tax dollars.
Let them speak Spanish.
Let them speak Chinese.
Let them speak any thing they choose.
Let private businesses cater to them. If they cater to illegal aliens I won't buy from them, but that's my right, just as it is their right to get business from anyone they choose. There is no law saying you can't sell something to a criminal.
But NOT ONE DIME for bilingual government aid.
We don't owe them that.
Neither did the Cherokee owe the "White Invaders". |

Because they were not dependent on the infrastructure built by the Cherokee since there was no infrastructure nor economical system of any significance in place. Today's immigrants come to benefit from the infrastructure built by ingenious Americans. Beside many immigrants in the past came here from Europe because of population growth, they needed more space and there was plenty of space here, way more space than the natives needed. |

Not a good comparison. If you went to Mexico would you EXPECT to have a school teach your child in English and that all businesses have an English translator. No, you would take the initiative to learn the language. |

Stupiiiid.
Why didn't the Spaniards learn Mayan and Aztec? Because they didn't intend to assimilate to these peoples culture. Just to take it over. |

The White invaders didn't learn Cherokee or any other language in the old days. It was the white mans culture to simply wipe out or force conquered civilisations to live their way because they viewed themselves as superior beings |

I like how the USA is "bilingual" according to you, guess you just alienated 20+ languages from other immigrants, well done!
The reason most people in the States are so upset with the Spanish stuff is due to the fact it is just shoved down our throats constantly.
My ancestors came from Norway and Sweden, they were NOT allowed to speak in their Native tongue at home, period. They were told that if you wanted to succeed you MUST learn the language where you live. Shocking, that was in 1899, oh to buy a time machine...
And why didn't we speak Cherokee? Some did, we traded with them. So did the Cherokee, that wanted to trade. Uh oh, looks like some folks understood basic econ better than you in the 1600s. |

I think they were killing them off so fast that they did not have time. They wiped out their culture and this I hate. |

Some did, however, we didn't join their society, attend their schools, have them hire us or give us medical care. We looked to eachother for that. |

Very good point. What do you call a person fluent in three languages? Trilingual. In two? Bilingual. In only one? American. We have been very arrogant. |

You can rest assured it wasn`t for the same reason your murdering " Brown" Spanish Conquistadors , Pizarro , Cortes`, Orellana , Cabaza de Vaca , and all the other ones` in between didn`t learn to speak Aztec , Mayan , or the language of the Incas` ?? Ponce de Leon , did he learn to speak Seminole ? Nope , no need to learn the language of the civilization you completely destroy ; then murder , rape , and pillage leaving nothing but your stench of death . Read about Cortes' capture of The Aztec King Cuauhtemoc , and the same day as the surrender the Spanish looted the city ! All the captives were forced back . Later it was ordered that all of the captives be sacrificed everywhere in their temples`.See; you don`t have time to learn their language , you murder them before they can teach it to you !! I can only imagine how "grateful" those civilizations are that the Spanish wiped from the face of the earth were ; to have had bilingualism enhance their lives , even if only for a day ! The American Indian is still around today , and they do speak English very well . |

I hear they are putting an end to the bilingualism because I find it funny that the teachers are teaching the Spanish language badly. Including to the Spanish speaking children. So ENGLISH only is in.
To answer your question the White invaders did learn the language of not only, Cherokee, but Lakota, Shawnee, Apache, and many more. Sign language as well. They assimilated more, and communicated with the Native American Indians better, and more than the Spanish, and Mexicans did. As the latter two did not assimilate or learn the Native Americans languages. |
|

alexandria nicole

Let's see. Because there were more white invaders than Cherokees. So that makes the Cherokees the minority. Plus, the white invaders didn't have intentions on assimilating with the natives. So they didn't really care. |

I have a better question, why didn't they stay and fix their own countries, in Europe.....good points though... |

If one wishes to profit and succeed, one learns the widely spoken language of which nation they immigrate to. Otherwise they are sentencing themselves to failure.
One out of every five people on earth can speak English.
Spoken in: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States and many other countries.
Total Speakers: 1 billion–1.5 billion vs. 500 million who speak Spanish.
Official Language of: Liberia, several Commonwealth countries De jure, non-exclusive: Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, South Africa, Kenya, India, Pakistan, Philippines,
English is the most widely taught and understood language in the world.
English is the dominant international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, diplomacy and the Internet.
It has been one of the official languages of the United Nations since its founding in 1945.
English also is the most widely spoken Germanic language.
English is the traditional language of 67.2% of the worlds population. |

Bilingualism is fine. Multilingualism is better. But, why Spanish? No significant international business or diplomacy (except with a handful of Third-World countries with virtually no international standing) is conducted in Spanish.
Some will argue that "they're our neighbors." So is Canada, a country of much greater economic and strategic importance, which is bilingual. Why no argument for French, which is also the accepted language of a major, industrialized, European nation and has been the unofficial (and in many cases official) language of international diplomacy for hundreds of years?
With very, very few exceptions, the only value in learning to speak Spanish is for recreational (travel) purposes and to facilitate communications on a domestic level with those who insult our culture through their refusal to learn English.

So learning cherokee would have better enabled Americans to put a man, in a rocket, on the Moon, have another spaceship orbit Mars, split the atom, and win 2 world wars? I don't think so.
Over the last 10 years there have been many nationalities emigrating into England; Polish, Hungarian, Romania, Latvian, French, Spanish, German, Nordic, Checks, Italians and dozens of others from Eastern Europe who's Countries Americans will never have heard of.
They all have to learn English, why? Because if you are in England and do not speak English you are absolutely F--u -cke-d, there is nobody around to help you, you would have to go to an Airport to get help or call the police. I have seen it happen.
People in England, generally have no understanding of other languages, why should they?, what is the point? do they really have the time to learn many different languages?;
I think not.
Here is my point, we need a single language so everyone can communicate effectively to progress in society. We must choose one language; so why not the language of the majority of the home country. (USA) which happens to be the most widely spoken and understood language in the Universe, why complicate things? you know it makes sense. |

Because they didn't pay enough taxes to cover our "Cherokee-as-a-Second-Language" classes.
Stupid. Business around the world is conducted predominantly in ENGLISH, not spanish. Get a clue, and a grip while you're at it.
EDIT: So are you saying that mexicans are coming here with the intent to conquer us? But I thought they just wanted a better life (yeah right).
Why are YOU so worried about Spanish? You should be ordering everyone to speak Cherokee. |
|

Actually White Invaders did learn to speak the languages of the Cherokees, the Navahos, the Oneidas, The Iraquois, and the Lakota. the reason this question is ill informed is that anyone who wants to trade with a people learns at least, a working knowledge of the language of those people. SO, this portion of your argument is specious.
America should be grateful that any language is prevalent because different languages encourage different thinking patterns. The Mexicans should be less so however, since Spanish is a daily reminder that they were a conquered Nation. They should be just as nervous about speaking French for the same reason.
Any country that is comfortable with it's own culture and traditions has a healthy attitude toward newcomers. One example:
when I arrived in Germany, I was immediately taken to Head Start. this was a program that taught soldiers some rudimentary language skills and some cultural norms of the country they were about to assimilate themselves into. One of the instructor's favorite jokes was a saying that the Germans taught to her during her first week there.
"If you can't speak the language, Don't Learn It!"
The German people really don't appreciate hearing their language spoken badly and would much rather speak to you in English. (Which most of them speak very well, with crisp British Accents) They are extremely polite about it and will often claim that they would appreciate the opportunity to practice their English with us, but they are in reality, very fussy about grammar, diction and syntax.
I stayed in Berlin for almost eight years and proceeded from there to El Paso, where I went downtown one day to pay a deposit on an water or electric bill. (can't remember which) A very nice lady came up to me on the street and started speaking to me very rapidly in Spanish. I politely replied that "Muy Espanol is poquito" (I speak small Spanish) and she got visibly agitated. The next thing she said to me was "If you respected us, you would learn our language!" (Keep in mind that I had only been there for less than two weeks) My reply was, "Fine, would you like me to learn Navaho, Incan, Aztec, or Mayan? Spanish is the language of your conqerers, how is that a sign of respect?" Obviously it ended the conversation, but it got me thinking about the overall differences in the cultures I had encountered.
Our schools are beginning to stress the importance of being bilingual, teaching everything from Spanish to Chinese. This is a wonderful thing. On the other hand, California recently shut out funding (by popular vote) of Spanish bilingual programs in public schools because it was determined that the students weren't being taught English. Most first generation immigrants absolutely insist that their children learn English immediately, as they want them to flourish in the new country. If a Hungarian mother thought that her child was going to public school every day and learning nothing but Hungarian in America, the school would get sued.
Bilingualism enhances people's overall learning abilities, but keeping students from learning English is one of the most glaring reasons why the dropout rate for students in the Southwest is so high. In theory, the idea of encouraging students to keep their native language is sound. In practice, many of the teachers hired to maintain that balance stress Spanish exclusively, especially in the lower grades. California was a wakeup call, and many of the school districts are investigating this, but it is going slowly, despite complaints, especially from parents moving into the area from other parts of the country.
Added in response to the statement below:
In answer to your request for proof, not every "White man" who came across the sea did so out of hopes for conquest. Some of these individuals had friendly relations with the Native Americans, interbred with them, and in the failed colony of Roanoke, were actually assimilated into the tribe (according to recent DNA evidence)
Not every person who came across was a Warrior either. If you want evidence that there were attempts to learn Native American languages, look at the Bibles translated into Native American Languages, all the way from the Southwest, to the Athabaskan and Inuit tribes. My family is part French Canadian and Native Canadian. Most of the genuine scholarly effort was done by amateur anthropologists and traders, recognizing that the only way to be treated with respect among a people who were already established in a territory, was to learn enough of their language to do business with them. This was especially true among the Norwegians, Quakers( a religion, not a nationality) and Germans (who founded some of the now famous Pennsylvania Dutch (Deutsch)settlements. Some of the East Coast Tribes actually allied themselves with the colonists in the Revolutionary War, one of them being the Oneidas, who I had the good fortune to live among as a child. |

Number 1, the Cherokees were not the only native americans here, so choosing their language over any others would not make sense. Number 2, it was the original settlers that developed and colonized the land. And it was they who made the laws, including the decision that this would be an English speaking country. It has been that way since America was founded. I wasn't born in America with a choice on what language I wanted to speak. I was born in America with the English language as the country's language of record.
They came here of their own free will, they can choose to either assimilate or go back home. You can't have your cake and eat it too. They can't say they want to come to America because we have so much to offer and not embrace our customs as well. You don't get to pick and choose what you will accept about our country. |
