Because the Department of Education doesn't want Americans to be able to think clearly. Most kids these days have never even heard of the Constitution of the United States of America let alone facts about other countries. Strange. |

why do you care what we think? we dont care what the UK thinks, so I guess theres your answer. |

What Americans think that?
I have known what the UK was since about the 5th grade |

Not all of us think that... |

Why do Britons think America is just the United States? Or better yet, why don't you bother educating yourself first before asking a question with a false pretense? |

when i tell most Americans i am from England they reply with the comment
"Oh yes New England is great in the fall"
This is probably the reason we reiterate that we live in the UK Just so you don't get confused between the two. I can fully understand how this is possible as most Americans do not realize there is a world beyond America.
Please i did not say ALL Americans i said MOST
Bye the way we address our Queen as YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS
not the queen of Britain. Manners please. |

It not just Americans, a lot of English people say they are from the UK not England,
Where has the Scottish say they are from Scotland & the Welsh say they are from Wales,
Really in the UK, it's only the English who say they are from the UK, so blame the English, eh? |

We don't. I know the UK is not only England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, but also the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. I have considered the Isle of Mann (also spelled Man) as a crown dependency and not really part of the UK proper. I will admit that I am vague on the autonomy of some of the islands. I am also curious about the power of the parliaments of Wales and Scotland and I do understand parts of the UK are seeking greater autonomy. The Queen could not be only the Queen of England or that would leave Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland without a sovereign. |

Thank you for that educational information. Most people here identify with the people of UK and hold all in high esteem. |

It's not fair that you generalize. |

It's like referring to people in the United States as "Americans" even though technically everyone in North and South America is an American, or of the old Soviet Union as "Russia" even though it was an empire ruled from Moscow -- a matter of habit and convenience ("UKan" and "USAan" aren't particularly mellifluous). |

Probably for the same reason that they couldn't find most Eastern, European, African, Middle Eastern or Asian countries on a map. |

All Americans don't. Some of us do know a little about other nations. Thank you! :) |

In reality most ******** americans do believe this.
Even I did at one point in my childhood.
I guess its just a generalization or stereotype with that phrase. |

Some do, most don't.
England is usually used as a generic term for the UK.
Are you aware that America is not just the United States of America. We have territories that are also part of America.
And for you silly people, Canadians are not Americans. Mexicans are not Americans.
Just because you live in some area of North, Central, or South America does not make you an American. |
