Technically, Spain at time owned the area from Texas all the way to California and all the way up north to Oregon. When the Mexicans won their independence from Spain in 1823, I believe, they inherited what was then New Spain or as its known, "Nuevo Espana". And yes, it did include Colorado. But in the 1840s, America wanted to expand all the way westward and Americans were moving to modern-day Texas. The Americans wanted Texas to become American. Mexico actually encouraged American immigration to the region because of two major reasons. The first region was the Texas territory of what was then Mexico was underpopulated with a few missionary outposts. Second of all, the citizens they had in the area the more government revenue they could have gotten. The allure of the Texas territory was the gold rush. However, the Mexicans had one caveat about American immigration to the region. The Mexicans outlawed slavery. The Americans felt that since they were paying taxes to the Mexican governnment that the Mexican government should just mind their business. (Sounds familiar)
Fast foward, Mexico sent troops to the Texas area to keep the Americans in line. The Americans fought against the Mexicans and defeated Mexico at the battle at the Alamo. Mexico had no choice but to give Texas its independence. It is important to note that Texas was an independent nation. Later the Americans bought about 1 million acres from Mexico called the Gadsen Purchase. It is also important to note that Mexico's hold over the far-flung reaches of their possessions north of the Rio Grande was weak at best.
But the United States won the New Spain territory or after Mexican independence, New Mexico via the Mexican-American war. Technically to say that America belonged them isn't true as Spain only colonized Mexico in 1509. Simple subtraction find the western US belonged to Mexico(1848-1823) only 25 years. It belonged to Spain for (1823-1509) 314 years. |

They are sorely misinformed if they are saying thousands of years ago. Hundreds of years ago the Spanish came and conquered various Nations in the southwest. Around 160 yrs ago, the US defeated in battle the Mexicans (which mixed the Nations and with the descendants of the Spanish) and took control of the southwest and we even had control of Mexico, but as peace terms we gave them their country back and even paid them for the Southwest (except Texas).
According to the ancient rite of war any land won in the process of war belongs to the victors |

Parts of the US did at one time belong to Mexico. If they took it back it would be as bad as teh rest of that country |

It used to belong to Mexico, but the USA bought it.
It doesn't belong to them anymore.
They think by flooding the USA illegally they can somehow overpower it and take it back.
Thats why congress needs to pass a good law now and stop all this illegal immigration.
America was built by LEGAL immigrants who came here and learned english and worked hard for what they have. |

Not every Mexican says it so shut the hell up. I'm Mexican and I never said it. Damn white people think they're better than everyone. White power my @ss!! Ever heard of Cesar Chavez??? A labor leader who launched a boycott against the table grape growers, mobilizing consumer support throughout the United States......White people are just jealous because we have REAL food instead of eating eachother! |

Why do Mexicans say America belonged to them thousands of years ago? because it is the truth. Almost haft of what is today the U.S. once belonged to Mexico. The U.S. did pay Mexico for the territory.....it was worth a lot more than what was giving... A LOT more...... It was worth 100 dollars and they have Mexico 5 cents.( just a comparison)

The one that is saying this is a professor at UC Riverside.

Mexico never got independent until 1867 lol |

Because Mexico once belonged to South America and they want someplace to go if South America decides to take Mexico back. |

some states are part of mexico before. yes, the white people bought it but not at a fair price. white people make deals with corrupt spanish government officials and paid them for a fraction of the price. you see, always to the interest of america! don't care about other country. and we wonder why other people hates america. |

"They" is a pretty broad term, and I doubt the Mexican government is talking about trying to regain land that previously belonged to Mexico but is now owned by the US.
Mexico did used to own quite a bit of land that is now owned by the US, including most of Texas, California, Arizona and other states. It was taken through force and via treaties over time. However, it wasn't thousands of years ago, it was hundreds.
It's disheartening to read that this is all shocking to you - didn't you learn any of this in school? I would suggest that you do some reading - go to the library, look around on the internet. American history is interesting. Not always flattering to us, but interesting.
Good luck expanding your knowledge - I hope you will do so. |

Zogby's poll found that 58 percent of Mexicans agree with the statement "the territory of the United States' Southwest belongs to Mexico." Only 28 percent disagreed while 14 percent were unsure.
Meanwhile, 57 percent agree with the statement "Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without U.S. permission," while 35 percent disagree. Seven percent were unsure.
The poll was conducted among 801 adults chosen at random throughout Mexico and has a margin of error of 3.5 percent

They are already claiming it's Theirs !
What are these desires?
(1) Political revanchism—to regain control of the territories Mexico lost to the U.S. in 1848, thus avenging themselves for the humiliations they feel they have suffered at our hands for the last century and a half;
(2) Cultural imperialism—to expand the Mexican culture and the Spanish language into North America; and especially
(3) Economic parasitism—to maintain and increase the flow of billions of dollars that Mexicans in the U.S. send back to their relatives at home every year, a major factor keeping the chronically troubled Mexican economy afloat and the corrupt Mexican political system cocooned in its status quo.
(4) our land
We bought it from mexico's conquerors. hello |

didn't your mother tell you not to believe everything you here!!!! plus not all mexicans say that... maybe it is taken out of context because about 30,000 years ago asians migrated across the bering straits all through north america down to the tip of s. america. which means indigenous peoples were living here many years before columbus came in 1492. when the american western expansion began in the 1800's southwestern USA did belong to mexico. mexico sold it to the united states after the mexican-americanwar for one million dollars. mexico had to sell the land because usa would have taken it anyway, but it's all good... mexicans don't want their land back they just want an opportunity to make a livable wage...just any other person on the planet and if that makes them criminals then so be it!!!! |

first of all, there is no reason to be RUDE. Mexico DID own a portion of the USA. ..maybe starting 4 to 5 thousand years ago up until the 17 or early 18 hundreds. whatever radio station you heard that on must be run by a bunch of hicks, because i've never heard ANY Mexican say that. it's not going to happen. ever.
why worry about it? |

I Think the Truth is that Before what we know as America Existed it was inhabited by several groups and tribes that lived in different ways than we, as Americans, now live. And like many nations throughout the World, a group of people came along and overpowered those living on what was just land, not North America, Not United States, just land. And in taking the Land claimed ownership of the Land and decided who and what the land was owned by. Not a new idea, just run with more control and seemingly more power. But I subscribe to the idea that Land is not something that human beings can claim ownership to. Actually how can a person own something like Land or water or even Air for that matter. We all affect the land, so shouldn't we all benefit from the land? Something to think about. |

Once again nothing but hillbillies and rednecks are trying to get some attention...and this it's not for you my dear who posted this Q,but some of your audience.Once upon the time the majority of the United States did belong to Mexico. Some people believe the land was stolen from the Mexicans. Therefore they might believe it still theirs. However for some of you who can come with anything better than "retarded Mexicans or they don't know how to read English" I believe you are the ones who are retarded plus ignorant, obviously you are stereotyping and you don't have much educate when it comes to this issue , hit the books and be a good American example, you are making us ( the rest of Americans) look real bad... good luck uncultivated people |

MEXICANS SAY AMERICA BELONGED TO THEM BECAUSE MOST MEXICANS ARE MESTIZO OF ORIGIN AND MESTIZO IN SPANISH MEANS MIXED RACE. THEY ARE PART CAUCASIAN SPANISH AND NATIVE AMERICAN MOSTLY FROM MAYAN/AZTEC AND MOST WHITE AMERICANS ARE DESCENDED FROM BRITISH AND GERMAN SETTLERS FROM EUROPE WHICH MEANS THAT YOU ARE NOT REALLY AN AMERICAN BY BLOOD BECEASE YOUR WHITE SKIN AND FEATURES WAS NOT BORN ON THE CONTINENT. |
