Why do immigrants have to take the citizenship test when most Americans don't even know the answers?

You're right; there shouldn't even be a test. Instead, one of your parents should have to be a native-born American for you to become a citizen.

back when that test was written most Americans did know the answers....but that curriculum is barely taught in schools anymore...

The citizenship test is designed with a very specific purpose in mind. On one hand, it is believed that an "American" should know the answers. It is debatable, of course, that all "born-Americans" will know the answers, but that is not the point. On the other hand, it is also believed that the more you know about the country you live in, the more you'll love it. In a nutshell, you cannot be an "American" if you know nothing about America, its foundation, its history and its culture.

They have to take it because they are not American. Americans deserve the right to not take it. Immigrants should have to take the test to prove that they should be able to stay in America. It does not matter if a small percentage of Americans do not know the answers because at some point they did learn about it.

because its best to know the american way before moving here as they fit in better and actually know whats going on in not only the present but they understand the important stuff as well about history. Alot of people from other countries also study about america like we do in school. Normally when you immigrate here its because you like america and want a better opportunity and like it. So its best to know all the stuff they ask. the test isnt that hard. I took it for fun and its nothing you shouldnt already know. A few were tough, but it was pretty simple.

Immigrants have to take the citizenship test to determine if they deserve to be considered Americans. America is an incredible country, and not everyone can be a part of it.

As for why Americans don't have to take it - well, it's in the Constitution. If you're born here, then you're an American.

How hard is it really to take the citizenship test and study for it? It allows you to obtain your citizenship. The people who actually have the nerve to complain about it are complete idiots. I have lived in America for many years legally and never had a chance to even obtain a green card or become a citizen. If somebody had told me I have the chance and just have to study for the test, I would gladly have done so!!!

uh, because they weren't born here and they should have to take a test. atleast it's only a test and they don't have to go to school for 12 years 8 hours a day to learn about the way the government works.....so they are getting the better end of the stick.
