..... racism and hate? Is 'Patriotism' the smoke screen? If they don't truly believe in this, why does it seem like they do? Have the hate groups won them over with their rhetoric?

The Anti-Immigration Movement
The immigration debate in the United States has been marked by racist propaganda, bogus statistics about immigrants and wild conspiracy theories — all of which combine to dehumanize Latino immigrants and falsely portray them as disease-carrying, job-stealing criminals invading our country.
This xenophobic rhetoric — echoes of the scapegoating of new immigrants throughout American history — has seeped steadily into the mainstream, taken up by right-wing politicians and popular media figures like Lou Dobbs.
The myths and conspiracy theories about immigrants often originate within racist extremist organizations. And the vitriol heard daily on talk radio and cable TV has helped nurture a movement of anti-immigration groups as well as traditional hate groups. Additional Details CORRECTION: ......IS FUELD BY:

I attended this rally as a counter protester.

They claimed to the crowd they were not racists. They carried signs against immigrants. They claimed to be "Separatists". They use the "N" word. They called us "animals" for flipping them the middle finger in front of their women and children all while playing racist music through loud speakers using the four letter "f" word.
They marched in goose-stepping, shouting "Heil Hitler". They hung the American flag next to a Nazi flag, their leader had a Hitler moustache.
Do not tell me it is not fueled by racism and hatred, I saw it with my own eyes and heard with my own ears.

Because it's not - we are able to recognize your civil rights/marxist politics and they're not working.
Illegal is not a race, just thought you should know.
The SPLC is a communist group - not a viable source.
Why do you post the same stupid questions over and over again. |

maybe because the "pro" side has been polluted by so many blatant race-baiters like you.....
case-in-point: the "anti-immigration" movement in every country is fueled by xenophobia....it is your constant dropping of the word "illegal" that exposes you as purposely manipulating two distinctly different issues in order to pimp your own, spiteful personal agenda... |

If I steal your car, Is there any possible way to have a fair solution to the problem that still allows me to keep your car?
If you come to this country illegally then you can't be allowed to stay here. It is not about hate or anything of the sort. It is about the basic rule of law. You have to leave to make it right.
Illegal immigrants break many laws in this country just to be able to function on a daily basis. Most have some form of forged legal document and many are engaged in identity theft even if their intentions are not malicious in nature. By raising families in these conditions it ensures that their children are not raised with a respect for our laws. I have friends on many sides of this issue and I'm not talking out of hate. I want people to come here. I think this country rocks and they will thrive here but they must come here the right way or it sends the wrong message forever. |

Have you ever heard of the rule of law. They are committing a CRIME by coming into this country without the proper documentation. Geez! |

You would actually have a case if it wasn't for the fact that most are only opposed to the ILLEGAL immigrants.
Mexican nationals receive more legal visas then any other country ... more then China and India, both countries with significantly higher populations.
It is people like you that are constantly trying to lump the illegals in with the legal immigrants to suit your own political agenda. |

If you think illegal aliens are harmless, hard-working, honest folks just looking for a better life, maybe you should invite a few to come stay with you. They can eat your food, trash your house, take over the TV, etc. By the way, if they are harmless, then why are 27% of all criminals in our federal prisons, illegal aliens? Maybe they are just looking for a better life, but at the expense of real Americans... |

Illegal immigrant is not a race so therefore, we are not racist. It is not our fault that the majority that come over illegally and mooch off of tax payers are, as some put it, " brown skin". Tell them to stop coming illegally and maybe the other "colors" will out number them! I am of "brown skin" but that does not make me ignorant to the facts! |

Just like you ALWAYS claimed on this site, everyone in this country is an IMMIGRANT, eventhough you have tried very very hard to blur the difference between "ILLEGAL ALIENS" and LEGAL ALIENS AND IMMIGRANTS, most Americans can tell the difference between them.
Why don't you try some common sense and honesty for a change??
I seriously believe you have some BIG problem with accepting reality.
and for your information, when you keep incessantly denying all the social and economic damages caused by illegal aliens, you make Latinos who are intelligent, well-educated and law abiding look like idiots. |

portray them as they are. facts are facts about these people and it is getting worse, now mexico has a flu epidemic and has even closed all schools, colleges etc.... That has been in the news by different stations and newspapers. Do you honestly think every illegal who comes here is healthy. NO! Are we not at risk if one person comes over the border without being inoculated. Yes!! I do not belong to any hate groups because I would never join la raza, just another form of kkk. I join groups who fight against all illegals, just the only ones you speak of are the majority and the most disrespectful. |

You were right he first time! No CORRECTION needed!
SPLC AKA "Society for the Propagation of Loathsome Criminals" is definitely a racist organization! But I don't remember anyone calling them Patriotic! If anything the opposite is true!
The immigration debate in the United States has been marked by racist propaganda, bogus statistics about immigrants and wild conspiracy theories — all of which is propagated by low life scum such as the SPLC and their buddies!
NOTE: This is 2009 your article is from 2006 and you have used it over and over and over again! Please find something a bit more recent. We are all sick of the same old lies over and over and over again! |

I stayed for 7 days in one of the poorest parts of rural Honduras for Christmas 2007, and I also have visited Guatamala and Mexico. Unless you've actually been to a really poor country there is no way to describe (to an American) what it is like. I don't care how many pictures, videos, Feed the Children documentaries, etc. you've seen. Until you see it "in vivo" you will be unable to relate. Staying in a hotel doesn't count either. If you are able to stay in one of these areas for a few days at a poor local resident's home (and I have), and still answer the following question with an answer of "no"---then you're either deceiving yourself or just plain foolish.
Question: If you had no hope of getting out of extreme poverty, would you try to help your family get to another country? Or, would you have such "reverence" for another country's laws and say, "No I think we'll just stay here and suffer--I don't want to upset the Americans by breaking their laws!"
How about when your child cries half the night from having severe cavities, but you can't afford to do anything about it...When your elderly Grandmother is screaming out with pain because she's dying of cancer, and no hospital will help because you have no money...These are everyday examples of what happen in the lives of so many people.
I do not think the United States can accept or help all of the poor people on this earth, but we don't have to be so hateful and judgemental either.
People coming here illegally aren't looking at the impact of "all illegal immigrantion" on our country. They're just trying to survive their personal life situation.
In my opinion, if a person hasn't visited a third world country, then they really aren't qualified to be "judge, jury, and executioner" in the affairs of other people's life decisions.
By the way, anyone who thinks an immigrant should "wait their turn" and come here legally needs to know that you don't eventually qualify from being on a waiting list. The odds of legally qualifying in one of our few Visa programs is more like the chances of winning the lottery. Not all countries are created equal from the eyes of the Dept. of Homeland Security. Supposedly, it is much easier to get a Visa if you are from a "lower risk" country. Unless you have the funds or assets to prove you will have reason to return to your country of origin, you can't set foot in the United States--not even for a vacation.
For example, a friend I know currently lives in Tijuana, but he's originally from Georgia. His girlfriend is a chemist in Mexico, and he wanted to take her to meet his parents (in GA). Do you know they disapproved her application, and she had to stay behind!
There are special programs, but like I said, the chances of approval are nil.
Everybody wants the US government to come up with a solution to our illegal immigration "problem". Fact is, there isn't a solution. Desparate people will always find a way or die trying.
Some Americans may be feeling like the Native Americans probably felt a few hundred years ago. Who knows, maybe in a hundred years, people may look at this like we now look at issues such as women's voting rights or slavery (even though the horrors were much worse in the latter to compare). One day we might not be able to imagine that people were once restricted to certain land boundries.
To illustrate how societal thinking changes, just think about Harriet Tubman. In her time, she was a criminal....now she is a hero.
If you can still judge a person after walking a mile in their shoes, then go for it. But before you criticize their actions, at least be able to say you "tried on their shoes!"
BTW, I am a white person, and I am tired of the stereotypical label that all whites are racists.
I apologize for such a long comment, but this issue is close to my heart. |
