Why do people immigrate to Canada and then refuse to learn the language, history and culture?

the main applicant must be able to speak english or french - but yes it really bugs me that the rest of the family are not required to speak english or french.

I have met several grandparents here in Canada who do not speak any english. One lady was russian, another was albanian and the third was chinese. They spoke NO english at all.

The same reason why people don't bother to learn the history, language, and culture(s) in America. They just want to feel at home, for whatever reason they are their. Say you moved to a completely different country. Lets say France. It would take some time to learn the language, huh? And their food, would you eat your normal diet? Or what they eat? Sometimes you just want a different location, but the relaxed feeling of 'home'.

This seems more like a rhetorical question, but a lot of the immigrants that come over don't have much of a choice. Their countries are more often than not in total disarray. They come to Canada because to them, it is a place that gives them better opportunities than elsewhere.

As a Canadian, one should be proud to be considered such a great country that those in need can look towards for help. It can seem like a burden sometimes, but in the end, they are tax-payers just like us.

Are you referring to every single new immigrant? I hope you're not because I know quite a number of immigrants and my parents were, themselves, immigrants.
My father took the time to learn English.
My neighbours took the time to learn English and our history.
Immigrants I have worked with took the time to learn English, to understand and to embrace our culture.

Maybe you need to meet different immigrants.

Beacuse Canada is really just the 51st U.S. State. It has no real history and most Canadians are confused with Americans overseas.

Why bother, eh. Just accept the fact you are second class Americans.

are you suggesting that Canada doesn't suport people identifying with thier heritage? Canadians won't print ballots in English instead of French (refereing to Quebec and Montreal area, of course.) What about healthcare? If I get sick can I go to the hospital and get an MRI if I tear my ACL? Will I have to pay for it? What if I forgot to get a visa, first? What about housing? Where do I apply for Canandian housing projects?
