Why do so many people assume that people against illegal immigration are also racist against Mexicans?

I'm so sick of people assuming that, because I am anti-ILLEGAL immigration, that I'm racist and anti-Mexican. First of all, I'm not racist against anyone and second of all, like many people in my position, I'm against ILLEGAL immigrants from ANY country, not just Mexico. Anyone who comes to this country (no matter their country of origin) without following the legal channels is breaking the law...it's that simple. It's easy for those illegal immigrants to claim racism because it diffuses the attention away from the real problem...which is the fact that they're breaking the law everyday that they stay in our country without obtaining proper LEGAL documentation.

Since when is it a bad thing to expect the citizens of this country to be law-abiding?

Because when people think illegal, they automatically think "Mexican". Doesn't that prove that you are racist? You are judging people by the their race. Not all Mexicans are illegal, I'm not, but i do hope that this country supports immigration reform, not some dumb ideas such as deport all illegal immigrants. We need them, just as much as they us.

People make assumptions like that because we are becoming a nation that thinks if you like someone you must give them everything they want. Look at modern parents. This country used to be about making your own way. Now I see a change coming that wants me to make your way for you and if I don't it means I'm a racist.
we have to feed and clothe everyone. I love the diversity that we have and enjoy the gift of all people. I like most of the people I meet. But if you ask people to follow the law of a country they say they want to be a part of then look out. People toss the race card around so much these days that it has come to mean nothing.

These people are in such a need of a compelling argument that they are willing to sink so low as to make such claims. There is actual racism happening in our country and around the world,and when people make such a spurious accusation it serves only to diminish legitimate claims and weakens the response of those in need of support when faced with racism.

I'm having trouble understanding that also. Every comment I have made on this subject has been made in reference to ILLEGAL aliens, no matter what their ethnic background might be. A good part of the Hispanic people in New Mexico, Arizona and California have roots going back further than the vast majority of anglo-saxons. If that doesn't make them United States citizens, what does? And how about the Native Americans living in the pueblo outside of Taos, NM? That pueblo has been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years, yet I would venture a guess that a great many of those folks are treated like second class citizens. If you have to be of European or British Isles descent to be a true blue American, there's something dreadfully wrong.

This is NOT about your personal attitudes regarding your "feelings" about Latinos or Latinas.

Everyone who benefits from unjust social structures that disproportionately affect people labeled minorities participates in racism. Thus, everyone who benefits from the badly-paid, uninsured, unbenefited labour of illegal immigrants which creates super-cheap products for US consumption and export upholds structures of racism.

Benefiting from so-called "open markets" that operate through unjust global trade structures that disproportionately impoverish those who live in the global South is also a participation in racism.

This is also not about guilt. It's about fighting those structures -- and we all can do so, for example by supporting the struggle of illegal immigrants, no matter what our status as a citizen or the way we're being labeled "racially."

Some people's personal feelings clearly add to the problem, as they don't allow us to see that the problem is elsewhere, and that it's a problem of global justice. We need to pay attention to race, precisely because it's a tool to perpetuate injustice.

I totally agree with coryshawn. At the same time, some stupid organizations also accusing us discriminating immigrants. Let me clarify this, we do not discriminate Hispanic, nor do we discrminating immigrants, we are only "anti-ILLEGAL immigrants" supporters.

Amen to your question. I am extremly anti-illegal immigration but I am not racist. I do not hate hispanics. I have several friends that are hispanic, they are just legal citizens and are also responsible citizens.
