Why do so many people want to make the illegal immigration issue a racist issue?

What I honestly believe it that they are trying to get everyone else of their ethnicity on their side, even when the interests of those legally here are hurt as much as ours are by illegal immigration.

It doesn't help that there are some out there who play into it with racist comments, as well.

Its a weak argument in the absence if anything more credible to support their views. Some people think it is, simply because the majority of illegal aliens come from one country... and, I don't consider nationality and race to be the same thing. Anthropologically, there are only 3 races.

I don't care where a person comes from, if they are here illegally, they need to leave.

They do understand that. They are simply trying to manipulate those who react emotionally to that word. Sometimes, I have to take a deep breath when the implication is made as I DO tend to react emotionally to it. However, my head does rule my heart and I can step back, after a moment, and make an intelligent assessment of it's veracity.

I dont know if I am racist, but anytime I watch the news and I see the illegal inmigrants asking for rights or in protests against Americans I feel a vomit coming from my throat. I think I am starting to hate Mexicans.

Mostly people turn the immigration issue into a race issue because in a way they are kind of ignorant of both issues. Many people hear illegal immigration and they immediately think "Hispanic" or "Mexican", or something similar. This is because in the media the reports on illegal immigration are centered on those coming from Mexico, Central, and South America. However, though they may make up a majority of illegal population, they are not the only ones. There are almost as many Indian illegal immigrants as there are Mexican (at least according to latest info I have seen). There are also a large number of Asians (Filipino, Chinese, Vietnamese mostly) who are also here illegally. Some have come here legally (initially) and then overstayed their visas, which has then made them illegal.

However, because of the negative feelings towards illegal immigration, and thus negative feelings towards Hispanics because of the media reporting, most people tend to blur the race and the immigration issue.

That being said, I agree, it is not a race issue, but a legal issue. However, most people can't seem to separate the two.

I don't know, I just want all the illegals out. I don't want them to be given amnesty because they are already here & breaking several laws. Get rid of ALL of them, not one race or another, if you are not here legally, you GO!

It might be becuase of relationship, but it really shouldn't be.
If they have family that has tried to come here illegally, they might take it as it is against the "whole" race.

But I am only grasping ... It is a legal issue and shouldn't be confused.

That's the only thing the illegals can say about it. But the thing is that we legal Americans are tried of losing our jobs to the illegals, just because our employers in this country are greedy and want cheap labor. I'm tired of making other people rich!

I think race does have something to do with illegal immigration. Most American politicians are afraid to take a strong stand against illegal immigration in fear of alienating Hispanic voters. And the largest advocacy group that supports illegal immigration is La Raza which means "The Race" in Spanish. There aren't any good reasons to support illegal immigration into the United States. So the pro-illegal side race baits because they know that if they accuse White Americans of being racist that most of them will shut up.

The reason why people make it a race issue is because of the people who right away bring Mexicans into the mix. IF you want to talk about legal or illegal then do it the right way. Talk in those terms. Don't point out a specific group of illegals. Then no one would need to bring up race.

Everyone opposes illegal immigration except a few exploitive business owners.

When you re-phrase the question and ask people whether we should allow a greater number of legal immigrants if the economy can support them, you learn their true attitudes. A lot of people who say they are only anti-illegal also want very strict limits on the number of legal immigrants. I don't think this is racist, because these people would find an American of another race more worthy of any courtesies than a foreigner of their own race, but it is nationalistic in a way that I find rather ugly.

I've never understood why they call it a race. Life is a race, and each ends in death, there is no difference in that for anyone of us regardless of color.
Those too ignorant to form a valid argument will play the race card. Those to lazy to make a difference in their own situation will also play the race card.
As for legal versus illegal....I venture to say most illegals know more about our laws than we do. I also venture to say they will do anything to get here, stay here, and if given a fair shake the majority would be happy productive members of society.
What should be illegal is for undocumented people to be allowed to draw govenrment benefits period. That and that alone is stimuli enough to draw them here to begin with. remove that stimuli and I promise you will see a reduction in their numbers. The only way that can change is to amend or abolish the 14th ammendment.
And for all the haters, I'd rather have 12million new friends than try to force 12 million angry enemies back into poverty.

Baby if you think that it is a legal issue and a legal issue only,then you live in a country that is not a country but fantasyland. People have been largely acussing Mexicans as a primary illegal target and give only limited attention to people of other countries like Russia, Ireland, England, and other eastern block countries that are here illegally. Why do you think? Because they are Caucasian? Can blend in? They dont take away jobs? Wake up.
